Arlene L. Howe – 75 – of Portland, MI, formerly of Hornell, passed away peacefully at the Niche Assisted Living Facility of Clare, MI.

Born in Corning, NY on February 29, 1948, she was the daughter of Richard & Virginia (Hollar) Schaumberg.

Arlene was a lifelong resident of Hornell, N.Y. before moving to Portland, MI. in 2018 to be closer to her family. She was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1967).

She was united in marriage to Lewis Howe in 1968, and together they enjoyed thirty-seven years of marriage until the time of Lewis’ passing on August 24, 2005.

While living in Hornell, Arlene was employed at McDonald’s Restaurant for about 5 years; served as a nurse’s aide at the Hornell Gardens Nursing Facility for 10 years; as well as a cashier at Wal-Mart. However she took her greatest pride in her role as a homemaker for her family.

Arlene enjoyed crocheting and baking (especially her famous raisin bread) and she was an avid collector of antique porcelain dolls and other “Knick-Knacks.” She had a love for all animals, but those that knew her best, knew her greatest love of all was time spent with her sons and grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Lewis Howe, her parents Richard and Virginia Schaumberg, sister in-law Jennifer Luther, her in-laws Jenny and Paul Warriner, and Dan and Ruth King.

Arlene is survived by her two sons John (Yvette) Howe of Portland, MI. and Paul Howe of East Butler, PA; her grandchildren Brittney, Kailyn, Logan, Brendan, Tyler, Cheyenne, Alyssa, and Nicholas. Other survivors include her brothers-in-law Donald (Patty) Howe and Leo Luther; sisters-in-law Margaret (David) Kashorck, Rita Smith, and Denise (Robert) Whitney; and several nieces and nephews.

At Arlene’s request there were no calling hours. A private graveside service was held at the Hornell-Rural Cemetery.

Penelope M. “Penney” Worth – 75 – of Whitney Valley Road, Almond, died Friday afternoon (May 24, 2024) at her home.

Born in Braddock, PA on June 4, 1948, she was the daughter of Philip & Jewel (Vaskevich) Smith. She has resided in the Almond area for over 35 years.

Penney was married to Ronald Worth who died in 1997. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Kathleen Vlasty.

Surviving are her son, Christopher (Michele) Worth of Almond; 1 brother, Rev. Lawrence Smith of Pittsburg, PA; 1 grandson, Wyatt Worth of Almond; several nieces & nephews.

Clifford W. “Cliff” Grover – 93 – formerly of Arkport, and also Rock Fall, Connecticut, died early Tuesday morning (May 21, 2024) at Elderwood at Hornell Nursing Facility where he had resided for the past three years.

Born in Middletown, CT on April 9, 1931, he was the son of Clifford H. and Frances (Ennis) Grover.

Cliff grew up in Rocky Hill, CT and attended Weathersfield High School (Class of 1949). He was a star athlete, excelling on the baseball diamond as a pitcher and actually played in the minor leagues. Cliff enlisting in the United States Navy in 1952. He was honorably discharged on January 21, 1954.

Following his discharge from the US Navy, Cliff returned Rocky Hill and began working at Pratt & Whitney as a Metallurgical Engineer where he spent most of his career. For a short period of time, he was employed at the Electric Boat in New London, CT, but returned to Pratt & Whitney in 1967 where he stayed until he retired in 1993. He resided in the Rocky Hill / Rock Fall area most of his life until relocating to Arkport in 2015.

A true outdoorsman, Cliff (known by close friends & family as “The Big Red Dog”) enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially hunting white tail deer in Connecticut, Vermont, and New York. He also loved gardening and was a lifelong New York Yankees, New York Giants, & UConn basketball fan. In his younger years, Cliff enjoyed playing golf & bowling and had been a member of several bowling leagues.

While living in Connecticut, Cliff was a communicant of St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church in Kensington. More recently, he had been a member of St. Mary’s Church in Canaseraga, NY.

Cliff was married to the former Winifred Antoinette Aubin who died October 22, 2014. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Lorrie Duke, on March 29, 2017.

Surviving are two daughters, Kim (Chris) Ogorzalek of Arkport; Wendy Darling of Virginia and grandchildren, Cassie Hill, Garrett Cerniglia, Spencer Duke and Sydney Duke; son-in-law, Stan Duke; great-granddaughter, June Hill; along with many nieces, nephews, & cousins.

At Cliff’s request, there will be no calling hours. A Funeral Service with Military Honors will be held on Tuesday (May 28th, 2024) at 7:00 PM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY with Father John Cullen officiating. Burial with will be in Rose Hill Memorial Park Cemetery in Rocky Hill, CT on Friday, May 31, 2024 at 12:00 Noon.

Darlene M. Harrison – 63 – of 139 Wall St., Corning, NY, died Sunday morning (May 12, 2024) at her home, following a long illness.

A native & lifelong resident of Corning, Darlene served as a “Lunch Lady” for the Corning School District for several years. For about 10 years she was employed in the housekeeping department of the Super 8 Motel in Corning and for about 22 years worked in the housekeeping department of the Radisson Hotel in Corning, retiring about 3 years ago.

Darlene enjoyed listening to Country Music and spending time working in her flower garden. She was a talented artist and loved painting “garden statues” and other ornaments. She also enjoyed her time camping at Sunflower Acres Campground in Addison, NY.

She was preceded in death by her father, Francis Harrison and her infant brother, Alan Joe Harrison.

Surviving are her longtime companion, Leigh Shaefer; her son, Dana Andrews of Corning; her daughter, Dolly McIntyre of Corning; her mother, Dorothy Taylor of Corning; 3 brothers, Randy (Inez) Harrison of Corning, Harry (Samantha) Harrison of Watkins Glen & Timmy Harrison of Corning; 2 sisters, Debbie Boissonneault of Corning and Rosie (Bruce) Watson of Corning; 5 grandchildren, Seth Andrews, Isaac Andrews, kloey Andrews, Martin McIntyre and Maggie McIntyre; several nieces & nephews.

James C. “Jim” Nosky – formerly of 2 Seventh St., Canisteo, died Saturday morning (May 11, 2024) at Elderwood at Hornell Nursing Facility where he had resided for the past 7 months.

Born in Buffalo, NY he was the son of Edward & Bernice (Connolly) Nosky.

Jim grew up in Cheektowaga and was a graduate of the Seminary of the Little Flower & St. Joseph (class of 1953). He received his Bachelor’s Degree in English from Canisius College and later received his Master’s Degree in Education with an emphasis on English from Alfred University.

For 32 years, Jim served as an English teacher at Jasper Central School, retiring in 1991. He was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church.

Jim was married on August 13, 1959 to the former Josephine Nasca who died November 1, 2018. He was also preceded in death by 2 brothers, Donald Nosky and Leslie McMullen; 3 sisters, Dolores Ulrich, Jeanne Joachimi and Bernice Kelly; his son, Robert Conlan.

Surviving are his son, Dominic Conlan; his brother, Robert (Carol) Nosky of Oswego; his brother-in-law, Robert Kelly of Kenmore; many nieces & nephews.

At Jim’s request there will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 10:00 AM at St. Ann’s Church. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

A. Jean Foley – (93) – of 1190 County Route 66 (The Woodlands), Hornell, formerly of Rochester, NY & Whittier, CA, died Monday morning at St. James Hospital following a long illness.

Born in Hornell on May 25, 1930, she was the daughter of Eugene & Irene (Davidson) Howe.

Jean grew up in Arkport and was a graduate of Arkport Central School (class of 1948). She resided in Rochester for many years and had been employed as a film inspector at Kodak Corporation and later as a lens polisher at Bausch & Laum.

She resided in Whittier, CA for many years and for 13 years she was employed as a “lead lady” at Beckman Instruments in California.

Jean was an avid bingo player and enjoyed reading & working on crossword puzzles.

Jean was married on December 27, 1951 to Michael Foley who died June 10, 2015. She was also preceded in death by her son, Michael E. Foley; her sister, Virginia Howe; 2 brothers, Ralph Howe and Francis Howe.

Surviving are 1 daughter, Patricia Jean (Ric) Saavedra of Oregon; 2 brothers, Dean “Ed” (Carrie) Howe of Arkport and Randy Howe of Daytona, FL; her sister-in-law, Barbara Howe of South Dansville;1 grandson, Aaron Nakahara; 5 step-grandchildren, Isaac, James, Abigail, Elizabeth and Marcos; several nieces & nephews.

Charles F. “Chuck” Curran – 77 – of 23 Crosby St., Hornell, died Monday morning (April 29, 2024) at the Bath VA Medical Center in Bath, NY, following a long illness.

Born in Hornell on February 8, 1947, he was the son of Edgar & Shirley (Davidson) Curran.

Chuck grew up in Hornell and, as a young child also lived on Keuka Lake. He was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1965). Following high school graduation he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served his country during the Vietnam era.

Following his honorable discharge from the US Air Force, Chuck returned to the Hornell area and, for a time, was employed at a printing company in Dansville, NY. For about 25 years he served as a bartender at the Hornell Association, retiring about 10 years ago due to ill health.

Chuck had been a member of the Hornell Association (where he served as a member of the Board of Directors), the Hornell AMVETS, Hornell VFW and the Hornell American Legion. He was a “die-hard” Dallas Cowboys Fan and enjoyed visiting casinos in Salamanca and Las Vegas.

He was married on September 6, 1969 to the former Nancy J. Pauly who died January 30, 2021. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Michael Curran.

Surviving are 2 daughters, Shannon (Kyle) Bell of Westfield, PA and Kelly (Edward) Ellis of Hornell; 7 grandchildren, Brittany (Reid) Welch, Jacob Seeley, Tyler Parker, Taryn Parker, Hayden Parker, Karlie Parker and Jase Ellis; 1 great-granddaughter, Quinn Welch; 2 sisters; 1 brother; several nieces & nephews. He will also be sadly missed by his “feline companions” (AKA Cats), Frisky & Sunny.

Janice Chardeen – 89 – a resident of Maple City Rehabilitation & Nursing Facility, formerly of Williamson, NY, died Friday (April 12, 2024) at St. James Hospital where she had been taken by Hornell City Ambulance.

Born on March 16, 1935, Janice spent much of her life in Rochester, NY and later Williamson, NY and had been employed as a nurse for many years. She had resided in Hornell for the past year.

She was preceded in death by her son, Nicholas “Nick” Chardeen.

Janice is survived by her step-son, Frank (Suzanne) Chardeen of Williamson.

Carlyle A. “Stoney” Stone – 83 – of 127 West William St., Bath, died Saturday evening (April 14, 2024) at his home, following a long illness.

Born in Towanda, PA on May 10, 1940, he was the son of William & Sylvina (Crayton) Stone.

Stoney grew up in Pennsylvania where he graduated from high school. He was an
11½ year Veteran of the US Army, serving his country during the Vietnam Conflict.

He was employed as a truck driver, primarily driving throughout New York State and Pennsylvania. Stoney enjoyed visiting various restaurants and, in his younger years, was an avid bowler.

Carlyle had been married to his first wife, Jean, who died about 30 years ago. He was also preceded in death by his step-son, Kevin Frisbie.

He was married on January 17, 1998 to the former Kay Arleen Thompson who survives. Also surviving are 2 sons, Carlyle “Ed” (Jovelyn) Stone and Stephen (Brenda) Stone; 3 step-children, Deanna Frisbie, Dana Furlong and Fred Frisbie; along with several other family members.

Mary K. Hetrick – 92 – formerly of Dansville, NY, died Tuesday afternoon (April 9, 2024) at Elderwood at Hornell Nursing Facility in North Hornell where she had resided for the past 10 years.

Born in Rochester, NY on February 4, 1932, she was the daughter of Richard & Grace (Laraby) Knitter.

Mary grew up in Brighton, NY and was a graduate of Brighton High School (class of 1950). She had been employed at Kodak Corporation for many years and later served as a switchboard operator at Industry School in rush, NY.

She was an avid reader (especially paperback “Romance Novels”) and throughout the years enjoyed working in her flower garden. She also enjoyed crafts attending ceramic classes and creating ceramic pieces.

Mary was preceded in death by her sister, Clara Horn and her brother, Edward Knitter.

Surviving are her daughter, Pam (Jeff) Gaudioso of Dansville; 3 granddaughters, Tanya (Nelson) Tatu, Nicole (Joe) Jerome and Lindley (Chad) Conte; 8 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great-grandchildren; along with other family members.
