Roger D. Amidon – 69 – of 7879 State Route 36, Arkport, died Saturday afternoon (July 25, 2020) at his home, following a long illness.

Born in Hornell on April 19, 1951, he was the son of Walter & Tressa (Brown) Amidon.

Roger grew up in Hornell and attended Hornell High School.  Throughout the years he was self-employed, most recently re-cycling scrap metal.

He was a true outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting & fishing.  He also enjoyed visiting the casinos in Salamanca, playing “Lotto” and rooting for the Buffalo Bills.

Roger was preceded in death by his father, Walter E. Amidon; his mother & step-father, Tressa & Paul Muchler; his step-brother, Gene Muchler; his brother-in-law, Wayne C. Woodworth.

Surviving are his son, Zachary Amidon; his daughter, Desi Rae Amidon of Oregon; 2 sisters, Sandra (Bruce) Davis of Michigan & Kay Flaitz of Florida; his brother, Steve Amidon of Hornell; his step-brother, Paul (Mary) Muchler of Arkport; his step-sister, Sandy Falco of Hornell; several nieces & nephews.

At Roger’s request there will be no calling hours.  A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday at 1:00 PM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY with Deacon Robert McCormick officiating.

Elsie Mary Cushing – 92 – of 1497 Water Wells Rd., Alfred Station, NY, died early Saturday morning (July 25, 2020) at her home, following a long illness.

Surviving are 2 sons, Mark (Janice Thies) Cushing of Ithaca and Eric (Eri) Cusning of Alfred Station; 1 daughter, Karen Cushing of Alfred.

William R. “Bill” Remchuk – 68 – formerly of Madison Ave., Hornell, died Thursday morning (July 23, 2020) at the Corning Center for Rehabilitation in Corning, following a long illness.

Born in Hornell on June 19, 1952, he was the son of John & Marguerite (Englert) Remchuk.

Bill grew up in Hornell and was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1970).  He was a veteran of the US Army, serving his country from 1970 – 1973.  He later served as a member of the National Guard.

For many years, Bill had been employed in the sales department at Arkport Suzuki and in his younger years was an avid motorcycle rider.  He was also a “camera buff” and for a time took family and individual portraits at Walmart.

Bill was married on September 10, 1977 to the former Michelle “Mikki” McDonald who died August 14, 2019.  He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Tabitha “Tabi” Remchuk Wang who died April 23, 2020; his brother, John Remchuk.

Surviving are his son, William “Bill” (Tanya) Remchuk JR of Corning; 4 grandchildren, Logan Remchuk, Breanna Remchuk, Evan Morse & Lexi Remchuk; several brothers & sisters.

Brian K. Morgan – 53 – of North Almond Valley Road, Arkport, NY (Bishopville), died Wednesday morning (July 22, 2020) at Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville, NY following a long illness.

Born in North Hornell on October 31, 1966, he was the son of Arthur & Doris (Hulett) Morgan.

Brian grew up in Bishopville and attended Arkport Central School.  From the age of 13, he enjoyed farming and for many years worked on several area farms including the Brown Family Farm in Bishopville, Sugar Creek Farm in Ossian and the Karr Family Farm in Fremont, NY.  He was a “Multi-Tasker” and could handle any farm related job.

For many years, Brian also was employed as a truck driver, driving for several area businesses such as Covered Wagon of Hornell, Scuba Construction of Almond and Leon Lacy Trucking of Arkport.  He was a self taught “Jack of All Trades” who was extremely mechanically minded and had a reputation of a man who could fix just about anything.

Having a deep love of the nature and the outdoors, Brian enjoyed hunting, especially deer hunting (both shotgun & bow) and small game hunting.  He also had an affection for animals and throughout the years enjoyed the company of his many pet dogs.  Brian will be sadly missed by his canine friend, “Tibber”, a “Jack-A-Poo” (Jack Russell & Poodle mix) who helped comfort him through his long illness.  He was also a long-time member of the Arkport American Legion.

Brian was preceded in death by his step-son, Daniel Crane; his father, Arthur Morgan; and his sister, Sherry Woods.

Survivors include his wife of nearly 28 years, Mary, who he married on August 1, 1992; his son, Jacob (Samantha Smith) Morgan of Bishopville; his step-son, Murray (Erica) Crane of Dansville; his mother, Doris Morgan of Bishopville; 3 brothers, Richard (Gail) Morgan of Greenwood, David (Gertrude) Morgan of Canisteo and Kevin (Marcie) Morgan of Avoca; 4 sisters, Janice Kepner of Hornell, Sandra (Al) Eymer of Bishopville, Donna (Lani) Barros of Burns, NY and Shelby (Leo Seamon) Eymer of Bishopville; 3 grandchildren, Arika, David & Julius; several nieces, nephews & cousins.

Marilyn M. Grillo – 90 – of 49 John St., Hornell, died early Thursday morning (May 14, 2020) at Elderwood of Hornell Nursing Facility, following a brief illness.

Born in Hornell on May 8, 1930, she was the daughter of Frank & Camilla (Angel) McClary.

Marilyn grew up in Hornell and was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1949).  While in high school, she began working, in many capacities, at the former Tuttle & Rockwell Store in Hornell, a job that she held from 1946-1950.  She later was employed for several years as assistant manager and buyer at the former Cameo Shop in Hornell.

In the 1970’s, Marilyn acquired her Real Estate License and for several years served as a real estate agent for Winter’s Real Estate in Hornell.  She later received her Broker’s License and began working for Real Inc. in Hornell.  She retired in 2017 at the tender age of 87.

Marilyn was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church.  She was also a member of the Ladies of Columbus, St. James Auxiliary, G. Carducci Lodge (Son’s of Italy) and the Hornell Alumni Association.

Having a deep love & affection for her family and many friends, Marilyn loved entertaining at her home and always enjoyed the company of others. One of her favorite times of year was Halloween inviting all the neighborhood children into her decorated home to give them candy, cider and doughnuts. She also enjoyed sketching pictures on the hill at Kanakadea Park.   She will be remembered as a genuine, giving, loving, compassionate woman who always had a smile on her face and a twinkle in her eye.  She will be sadly missed by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her!!

Marilyn was married on January 13, 1951 to Joseph “Joe” Grillo who died July 22, 2003.  She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Deborah “Debbie” Fahl who died September 5, 2019.

Surviving are her son, Michael “Mike” Grillo of Hornell; her daughter, Mary (Stephen) Westfall of West Palm Beach, FL; her sister, Betty Jean (Gene) Saville of Port Charlotte, FL; her son-in-law, James Fahl of Avoca; 4 grandchildren, Eric (Misty) Grillo, Jessica (Rhett) Snyder, Brian (Jessica) Fahl and Stephen (Brittany) Westfall; 10 great-grandchildren; several nieces & nephews.

Family & Friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass (Celebration of Life) on Saturday (July 25, 2020) at 10:00 AM at St. Ann’s Church with Father Stan Kacprzak officiating.

Herbert L. “Herb” Zuschin – (93) – of 7978 State Route 36, Arkport, NY, died early Tuesday morning (July 14, 2020) at Elderwood at Hornell Nursing Facility, following a long illness.

Born in Akron, OH on October 4, 1926, he was the son of Louis & Susan (Besterci) Zuschin.

Herb grew up in Akron, OH and later resided in Detroit, MI where he graduated from the University of Detroit High School (class of 1944).  He received his Master’s Degree in Engineering from Wayne State University in Detroit.

He was a Veteran of the US Army and was stationed in Fort Belvoir in Virginia during the Korean Conflict, earning the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

Following his honorable discharge from the US Army, Herb was employed in the Engineering Department of Manhattan College in New York City.  While working at Manhattan College, he met his future wife, Anne Farnan at the Newman Club at Columbia University.  They were married at St. Raymond’s Roman Catholic Church in New York City on July 11, 1959.

Residing in Connecticut for ten years, Herb served as Department Head at J.M. Wright High School in Stamford, CT.

Moving to Greenwood, NY in 1970, Herb had been employed in the Engineering Department at the Alfred State College (SUNY Alfred), retiring in 1991.  He & Anne resided in Greenwood for 40 years before moving to Arkport in 2010.  For about 22 years they resided in Tucson, AZ during the winter months.

Herb had been a communicant of St. Mary’s Church of Rexville and later a communicant of St. Brendan & St. Jude Parish in Almond where he served as a Eucharistic Minister.  More recently he was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church of Hornell.

In addition to his parents, Herb was preceded in death by his son, Mark H. Zuschin who died December 10, 2013.

Surviving are his wife, Anne Zuschin; 2 daughters, Kathryn Zuschin of San Francisco, CA and Mary Anne (Paul) Tytka of Buffalo; 1 son, Paul (Dana) Zuschin of San Diego, CA; 2 grandchildren, Matthew & Sean Tytka.

At Herb’s request there will be no calling hours.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 1:30 PM at St. Mary’s Church of Rexville with burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Rexville, NY.

Richmond, VA  /  Almond, NY

Gregory Wayne Ide – 42 – of Richmond, VA, formerly of Almond, NY, died unexpectedly on Monday, June 29, 2020.

He was born in Fort Campbell, KY on January 30, 1978 and throughout the years resided in many locations, including Kentucky, Virginia, Louisiana, New York and Pennsylvania.

From 1987 – 1994 Gregory lived in Almond, NY where he attended Alfred-Almond Central School.  He returned to Virginia about two years ago where he had been employed as a Heating & Air Conditioning Technician (HVAC).

Gregory will be remembered as a quiet “Family Man” who simply loved his entire family.  He was especially devoted to his daughter, Lila, and spent countless hours reading to her, working on puzzles and other crafts.  Gregory also enjoyed taking Lila fishing and going on long walks with her.  He was truly a “Proud Dad” who never missed one of his daughter’s school functions.  He loved playing video games and watching soccer games on TV.

He was predeceased by his paternal grandmother, Vicki Ide; his maternal grandmother, Margaret Shea, his maternal grandfather, Harry Shea; his uncles, Dave Hurd, Scott Shea, Mark Shea and Miles Shea.

Surviving are his daughter Lila M. Ide; his fiancé, Courtney Harris; his mother, Peggie Ide; his father, Eric Ide (Tammy Henry); 3 sisters, Bethany Ide, Erica Schneider, Erin Schneider Crawford (Ronnie); his paternal grandfather, William Ide; his nieces, Kelcy Deagle & Mercedes Crawford;  his nephew Trey Crawford; aunts, uncles, cousins, and many friends.

Joel E. Greenfield – 58 – formerly of 39 Sherman St., Hornell, died unexpectedly Saturday morning (February 8, 2020).

Born in Hornell on September 8, 1961, he was the son of Harold & Lillian (Brooks) Greenfield.

Joel grew up in Hornell and attended Hornell High School.  For a time he was employed as a mechanic’s helper at Covered Wagon Train in Hornell.  In recent years he loved to buy & sell on Ebay.

In addition to his parents, Joel was preceded in death by 5 brothers, infant baby boy Greenfield, Eric Greenfield, Leon Greenfield, Bruce Greenfield and Kent Greenfield; 2 sisters, infant baby girl Greenfield and Sherry Braden.

Surviving are 3 brothers, Lance (Sandra) Greenfield of Churchville, NY, David (Elizabeth) Greenfield of Woodhull and Ronald Greenfield of Illinois; 3 sisters, Penny Green of Henrietta, Starlene Welch of Illinois and Patricia (John) Bartholf of Woodhull; several nieces & nephews.

Marie R. Dugo – 92 – formerly of 129 Hornell St., died Thursday evening (July 2, 2020), surrounded by her family, following a long illness.

Born April 13^th, 1928, in Susquehanna, Pa., she was the daughter of Harry & Mildred (Barnhart) Parmelee.  She has resided in Hornell for most of her life.

Marie was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church.  She was also a member of the Beato Angelo Society.  She had been employed for many years as a waitress at the lunch counter at the former JJ Newberry Co., and also FW Woolworth in Hornell.

She was married on July 17^th, 1948, to John “Meo” Dugo who died September 27^th, 1998.  Marie was also preceded in death by her son, John “Floyd” Dugo who died December 17, 2012; her great-granddaughter, Savanna Rose Coots; her sisters, Marion Palmer, Kay Dunning and Lucy Foster; and her brother, Eugene Parmelee.

Surviving are 2 sons, Benjamin M. Dugo of Hornell and Dominic (Lori) Dugo of Jacksonville, NC;  1 Daughter, Lynn (Melvin) Cline of Hornell; her grandchildren, Stacie Gibson, Shawn Cline, Brian Cline, Brent Cline, Christopher Cline, Alicia Dugo, Benjamin Dugo, Gemma Witt & Dominic Dugo; 13 great-grandchildren; 1 great-granddaughter; several nieces & nephews.

Maureen M. Galatio – 89 – formerly of Belle Haven Road, Hornell, passed away Sunday morning (June 28, 2020) in Wellsville, NY.

Born in Hornell on February 13, 1931, she was the daughter of William and Regina (Lynch) Tobin.

Growing up in Hornell, Maureen was a graduate of St. Ann’s School (class of 1944) and Hornell High School (class of 1948).  Following high school, she began her employment at the Erie Railroad.

She was married on June 16, 1956 at St. Ignatius Loyola Church to Stephen J. Galatio who died on October 20, 2001.  She was also preceded in death by her brother, Jack, who died in 2010.

She was employed at St. James Mercy Hospital from 1968 – 1980 as an occupational therapist and from 1980 – 1993 served as the Director of Activities & Volunteers at the Steuben County Infirmary.  As an active community volunteer she also served as ombudsman at local nursing homes and volunteered her time at RSVP; American Red Cross;St. James Hospital Gift Shop; St. James Auxiliary; the Ladies of Columbus and the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians.

Maureen was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and had been a communicant of both St. Ignatius Loyola Church and St. Ann’s Church and throughout the years, served as a Eucharistic Minister at both churches.

Maureen’s motto and the words that she lived by were “Faith, Family and Friends”.  She prayed the rosary every day and was proud of her Irish heritage.  Her home was the family meeting place for all holidays and special occasions.  Maureen cherished her friendships with her YMCA “swim buddies” and exercise classmates along with her card club.  She loved to attend the sporting events of her sons and grandchildren through elementary school, high school, college and Gus Macker tournaments.

Surviving are three sons, Joseph (Joyce) Galatio of Greece, NY, Daniel (Lisa) Galatio of Hornell and James (Kylie McLaughlin) of Cuba, NY; 1 granddaughter, Keri Galatio; 4 grandsons, Stephen, Shane, Tom & Jack Galatio; her brother, Tom (Gail) Tobin of Spencerport, NY; her sister-in-law, Shirley Tobin of Sneads Ferry, NC; several nieces, nephews & cousins.

There will be no public calling hours.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 10:00 AM at St. Ann’s Church.  Please follow all COVID-19 precautions at the church, including wearing a mask and social physical distancing.  Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
