Val M. Cushing

Val M. Cushing – 82 – of Water Wells Rd., Alfred Station, died Sunday evening (November 17, 2013) at Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville.

Survivors include his wife, Elsie along with his children, Mark, Karen & Eric.

At Val’s request there will be no calling hours or services.  Funeral arrangements are in care of the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY.

Robert J. Armaly Sr.

Robert J. “BobbyJoe” Armaly (Bailey) Sr. – 66 – of 15 Sawyer St. died at home following a long illness. 

Born in Hornell on August 6, 1947, he was the son of Robert F. & Dolores (Kellogg) Bailey.

BobbyJoe Grew up in Hornell and attended Hornell High School.  Throughout the years, he resided in many locations throughout the United States, including Pennsylvania, California, Maryland, but resided in the Hornell-Canisteo area for the majority of his life.

He was an avid outdoorsman and loved fishing and dogs. A carpenter-painter by trade, BobbyJoe will be remembered by many residents of the Hornell and Canisteo area for his passion for painting homes and riding his bicycle along Route 36. 

Surviving are his children, US Army Captain Robert (Caitlin) Armaly Jr. of New Castle, IN and Angie Burlew of Corning, NY, his sister Charlotte Stratton of Alderson, OK, three brothers, David (Debbie) Bailey of Hornell, Tommy Bailey, and Tony Bailey of NJ; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces & nephews.

At BobbyJoe’s request there will be no prior calling hours.  A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday at 2:00 PM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY with Deacon Robert McCormick officiating.

Susan E. Stillman

Susan E. “Sue” Stillman – (64) – of 44 Lisi Lane, Hornell, went to be with the Lord when she passed away Friday evening (November 1, 2013) at her home, following a courageous battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS — Lou Gehrig’s disease). 

Born in Brockton, MA on November 7, 1948, she was the daughter of Edward & Emily (Reardon) Stoddard. 

Sue grew up in Brockton and graduated from Brockton High School (class of 1966).  Following graduation from high school, she worked for numerous shoe manufacturing companies in Massachusetts & Maine, including the Knapp Shoe company of Brocton, MA.  She resided in Florida for several years where she was employed at Disney World as custodial host at EPCOT Center.  

In 1993, she moved to Hornell and decided further her education and obtained her Certified Nurse’s Assistant (CNA) license through the Hornell BOCES Program.  She later went on to become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). 

For about 2 years, Sue worked at the Hornell Campfire Office and for about 15 years worked as an LPN at McAuley Manor in Hornell.  She later was employed as an LPN in the office of Dr. Virginia Shepard at Elm Street Family Practice in Hornell , working until she was diagnosed with ALS in 2011. 

Gertrude “Trudy” Butera

Gertrude Ann “Trudy” Butera – 93 – of State Route 21, Almond, died Tuesday morning (October 29, 2013) at the Wellsville Manor, following a brief illness.

Born in Leetonia, OH on July 23, 1920, she was the daughter of Joseph & Mary (Perry) Butera.

Trudy was a graduate of Leetonia High School (class of 1938).  Following high school, she worked as a cashier for Mutual Discount Company for 1 year and from 1939-1951 was employed as a cashier and assistant manager for Capital Finance Corporation.  From 1951-1959, Trudy served as Vice President of the Union National Bank of Youngstown, OH.  She later served as Administrative Assistant of Marketing at Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company. 

While in her late 40’s, Trudy decided to further her education and in 1969 she received her B.S. / B.A. Degree in Advertising and Public Relations from Youngstown State University.  In 1971 she received her M.B.A. Degree in Marketing from the University of Akron.

Larry E. Jackson

Larry E. Jackson – 63 – of Bath, NY died unexpectedly Monday at his home. 

He was born December 22, 1949 in Catskill, NY and was the son of Lester & Mattie (Ivery) Jackson.  He has resided in Bath for many years.

Surviving are 4 brothers & 2 sisters.

Joseph P. Sexton

Joseph P. “Joe” Sexton – 51 – of Jamestown, NY, formerly of Hornell, died unexpectedly on Friday (September 27, 2013) in Jamestown.

Born in Hornell on May 5, 1962, he was the son of Thomas & Kathleen (Conkey) Sexton. 

Joe grew up in Hornell and was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1980).  While in high school, Joe excelled in sports — playing baseball & basketball for the Hornell Red Raiders.  He actually pitched a perfect game (no player reaching first base) while playing in the Hornell Babe Ruth League.

He was a veteran of the US Air Force, serving his country from 1982-1984 primarily being stationed in Germany. 

Following his discharge from the Air Force, Joe returned to Hornell where he resided for several years and has lived in Jamestown for the past 15 years.  Joe had been a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ignatius Loyola Church.

Michael E. McMahon

Michael E. “Mike” McMahon – 68 – of 803 Karr Valley Rd., Almond, died Friday afternoon (September 20, 2013) at his home, following a long illness.

Born in Great Bend, KS on October 3, 1944, he was the son of Arthur & Genevieve (George) McMahon.

Mike grew up in almond and was a graduate of Alfred-Almond Central School (class of 1963).  He had been employed for a time at Snyder Electric in Almond, Stuart’s Pools in Almond and also at Wellsville Preheater.  For over 30 years, Mike worked at Foster-Wheeler Corporation in Dansville as a Welder & Boiler Tender.

In his younger years, Mike enjoyed hunting & fishing.  His greatest joy in life however was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.  He always loved attending their sporting events, plays, chorus recitals and band recitals.

Florence (Johnson) Egger

Florence R. “Fabulous Flo” Egger – 92 – of Boulder, CO, formerly of Hornell died August 9th, 2013 at her home in Boulder.

Born in Bradford, PA on February 19, 1921, she was the daughter of Hugh & Florence (Disney) Johnson.

Florence grew up in Hornell and was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1939).  She had been employed in the meat department of the former Loblaw’s Grocery Store in Hornell and later as a secretary at Alfred State College.  She retired in 1984 and shortly thereafter moved to Colorado.

While in Hornell, Flo was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and had been a communicant of both St. Ignatius Loyola Church and St. Ann’s Church.  She enjoyed reading and cooking. 

She was married on March 14, 1942 to Gerald “Jerry” Egger who died March 28, 1954.  Flo was also preceded in death by her son, Gerald Egger JR; 4 brothers, Francis Johnson, Robert Johnson, Fred Johnson & Leo Johnson; 4 sisters, Eileen Johnson, Elizabeth Newman, Almeda Perkins & Stella Smith.

Surviving are 1 son, Jan (JoAnne Leegant) Egger of Rochester; 1 daughter, Michelle (Michael) Krell of Boulder, CO; 1 brother, William “Bill” Johnson of Hornell; 5 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; many nieces & nephews.

At Florence’s request there will be no prior calling hours.  Family & friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass on Saturday, September 28, 2013 at 11:00 AM at St. Ann’s Church.

Arlene Flora Egle

Arlene Flora Egle – (71) – of 1426 Eisman Rd., Arkport (Town of Fremont) died Friday afternoon (September 20, 2013) at her home, following a long illness.

Born in Oneida, NY on October 27, 1941, she was the daughter of Donald & Flora (Harvey) Church of Morrisville, NY.

She was married in Cazenovia, NY on September 19, 1964 to Donald Egle who survives.

Arlene graduated from Morrisville-Eaton Central School in 1959 and Delhi State College in 1961.  From 1961-1964 she was employed at General Electric Corporation in Syracuse.  For about 2 years, she worked as office personnel at a chiropractor’s office and 2 years as a dairy milker for a local farmer.  For a period of 35 years, Arlene and her husband, Donald raised beef & dairy replacements.

For many years Arlene attended St. Ignatius Loyola Church.  More recently she was a communicant of St. Ann’s Church.

Donald R. “Don” Marlatt

Donald R. “Don” Marlatt – 80 – of 81 North Church St., Hornell, died unexpectedly Thursday evening (September 19, 2013) at St. James Mercy Hospital where he had been taken by city ambulance after being stricken at home.

Born in Canisteo on September 8, 1933, he was the son of Elwin & Rachel (Burchard) Marlatt.

Don grew up in Canisteo and attended Canisteo Central School.  He later served his country as a member of the US Air Force. 

A resident of Hornell for most of his adult life, Don served several years as a firefighter for the Hornell Fire Department.  He worked for several years at the former Marion Rohr Corporation and for 22 years was employed at Foster-Wheeler Corporation in Dansville, retiring in 1995 as a clerk.
