Cynthia E. “Cindy” McGregor – 61 – of 26 ½ Greenwood St., Canisteo, died early Saturday morning (March 8, 2014) at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, PA following a long illness.

Born in North Hornell on March 9, 1952, she was the daughter of Robert & Marjorie (Payne) Hadley.

Cindy grew up in Jasper and was a graduate of Jasper High School (class of 1970).  She later earned her Practical Nurse’s License through the Hornell BOCES Program.  She was employed as an LPN for several years at Bethesda Community Hospital, Noyes Memorial Hospital, Hornell Gardens and Home Health Care.

She was married on April 28, 1973 to Gordon “Gordy” McGregor who survives.  Also surviving are 1 son, Seth (Jenny Stephens) McGregor of Hornell; 1 daughter, Kristen (William) Lain of Canisteo; 3 brothers, Dean (Myrna) Hadley of Hornell, Steve Hadley of Rochester and Randy (Liz) Hadley of Jasper; 2 sisters, Debbie (Carlin) Stephens of Jasper and Lori Drake of Canisteo; 4 grandchildren, Shelby Derck, Morgan McGregor, Aaron Lain and Abigail Lain; several nieces & nephews.

Mary Rose Daniels – (94) – formerly of 44 Davenport St., Hornell died Monday morning (March 3, 2014) at Latta Road Nursing Facility where she had resided for the past year.

Born in Hornell on June 22, 1919 and was the daughter of Frank & Catherine (Surra) DeGaetano.

Mary grew up in Hornell and was a graduate of St. Ann’s School and later attended Hornell High School.  She was employed for several years at the former Dolores Dress Factory and later at the former Cameo Shop in Hornell.  For several years Mary worked for her brother at DeGaetano’s Shoe Store in Hornell.

She was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a member of St. Ann’s Church where, in her younger years, taught Religious Education classes.  She was a life member of the G. Carducci Lodge (Sons of Italy).  Mary enjoyed spending time in her kitchen — cooking & baking — and was well known for her delicious cakes.

Ava Christine Giglio – precious newborn daughter of Todd & Giovina Lloyd-Giglio of 20 Mays Ave., Hornell, was taken into the arms of Jesus to share in new life eternal, on February 27, 2014, the day of her birth.

Ava was loved by her entire family and will always live on in our hearts as an Angel in Heaven.

She was predeceased by her maternal grandparents Thomas and Anita Lloyd. 

In addition to her parents, Todd & Giovina, survivors include two sisters, Gianna and Mia; her paternal grandparents, John & Laura Giglio of Hornell; her aunt & uncles, Margaret (Barry) Walsh and Brad Giglio; many cousins, great aunts and uncles; and a paternal great grand-mother.

There will be no calling hours.  Family & friends are invited to celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday at 10:00 AM at St. Ann’s Church.  Burial will be in
St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Darryl W. Coots – 36 – of 53 Hartshorn St., Hornell, died unexpectedly on Thursday (February 27, 2014) as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Darryl was born in Hornell on June 1, 1977.  He grew up in Addison, NY area and later in Rushville, NY where he attended Marcus Whitman High School.  He was a veteran of the US Army, serving his country from 1996 – 2000 and stationed for a time in Korea.  Darryl was a member of the Addison American Legion Post 730.

Following his honorable discharge from the US Army, Darryl moved to Hornell and was employed as an auto technician at Wilkins RV and later as a technician and driver for Covered Wagon.  For the past four years, he was employed as a mechanic for New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG), working out of Hornell.  He served as vice union chair of Local 83 IBEW.

Darryl enjoyed hunting, fishing, go cart racing and was an avid bowler and gun collector.  He also loved working on and restoring cars & trucks and lending a helping hand to his friends while they worked on their cars & trucks.  He served as a coach for the Hornell Youth (Flag) Football League and also coached Hornell Little League.  He was also a former player for the Hornell Dragons Football Team.

Isabella Grace (Grimm) Glenn – beautiful daughter of Tiffany Grimm & Jeffrey Glenn of 49 Hartshorn St., Hornell, was taken by the Angels to be with the Lord before she had a chance to enter this world.

 Although she died before being born, Isabella Grace was truly loved by her entire family.  Along with her sister, Alana Rose (Grimm) Simms who died in 2005, she is now an Angel in Heaven!

 Surviving are her parents, Jeff & Tiffany; 3 sisters, Madyson, Alexis & Haylee; grandparents, aunts, uncles & cousins.

 There will be no calling hours.  Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY with Deacon Robert McCormick officiating.  Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Robert C. “Bob” Thompson – 51 – of 2332 Turnpike Rd., Hornell, died Saturday afternoon (February 15, 2014) following a long illness.

Born in Hornell on August 26, 1962, he was the son of Carlton & Dorothy (Bartle) Thompson.

Bob grew up in Hornell and was a graduate of Hornell High School.  Following graduation, he enlisted in the US Army and faithfully served his country for the next four years.  After his honorable discharge from the US Army, he decided to further his education by enrolling in the Wellsville Division of SUNY Alfred where he majored in computer technology.

Bob was employed for a time as a truck driver for Canada Dry Corporation in Hornell and later as an auto technician for Gardner’s Auto of Almond and the Bath Auto Group.  For the past 12 years, he owned & operated Hi Tech Computers of Hornell.

Throughout the years, Bob attended both St. Ann’s Church and Living Waters Church.  He was a member of the Hornell American Legion and was an avid hunter.  He served as Cub Scout Leader and Scout Master of the Boy Scouts of America. 

Anthony C. “Cappy” Cappadonia of Almond, New York, entered into eternal rest on Friday, February 7th, 2014, surrounded by his loving family.

Anthony was born September 10th, 1923 in Mt. Morris, New York, the son of Joseph and Louise (Teresi) Cappadonia. 

He was married to Zora Zella Babcock in 1947 and had nine children:  John “Rick” Cappadonia; Sue (Albert) Avery; Pamela Wright; Kathleen (Duane) VanWaes; Anthony Cappadonia, Jr.; Mark (Donna) Cappadonia; Chris (Nanette) Cappadonia; Therese (Scott) Delventhal; and Louise Ballard.  Zora entered into eternal rest in 1973.

In 1977, Anthony was married to Ruth “Bebe” Howes and had two children:  Joseph (Stephanie) Cappadonia, and Patrick Cappadonia.  They would have been married 37 years next month.

 He was educated at Mt. Morris Central schools and proudly served for three years during World War II with the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theater.  He then continued his education at Ithaca College, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in music education and a Master of Science degree in music.  He did additional graduate work at Syracuse University and Alfred University. 

Anthony then took a position as Director of Music at the high school in Savannah, N.Y.    In September of 1951, “Cappy” joined the Alfred State College family as an Associate Professor inaugurating the college’s vocal music program.  During the early years, he served as both band and choral director.  This included the concert choir and various small choral groups, a marching band, a stage band, and a dance band, also teaching music classes including Music Appreciation, Music Instruction and Rock Experience.

Mr. Cappadonia was recognized as one of the most talented higher education choral directors in the region.  For most of his career, he was an adjudicator and staff writer for the National Association of Choral Directors, and his articles on choral technique were widely published.  He was renowned for his written musical compositions, including “Alleluia, Prayer and Amen” performed at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., and served frequently as a reviewer for the prestigious Choral Journal, official publication of the American Choral Director Association.

Anthony received the Alfred State College Outstanding Service Award in 2000, and in the spring of 2012, the auditorium at Alfred was renovated and rededicated to “Mr. C.” 

In 1985, he retired from full-time duties as choral director at Alfred State College but remained at the helm of the college’s choral groups in a part-time capacity until finally retiring in 2007.  He continued his lifelong love of directing each spring when his choir family returned for their annual Choir Alumni Weekend, an annual event that Cappy eagerly anticipated all year long.

The Alfred State Choir Alumni Association has been a testimony to his many years of service, with approximately 350 active members, many of whom have returned to Alfred each spring to renew old friendships and sing together at the spring concert under the direction of their old taskmaster.

Mr. Cappadonia is survived by his children, his wife Bebe, his sister Louise Fagan, and his grandchildren:  Michael (Georgianna) Cappadonia; Beth (Donald) McPherson; P.J. Cappadonia; Mina (Brent) Barron; Christopher Avery; Wendy Wright; Jessica (David) Hines; Jason Van Waes; Andrew Cappadonia; Anna Cappadonia; Julee (Michael) Kildonk; Anthony V. Cappadonia; Rebecca Cappadonia; Katie Cappadonia; Kelsey Delventhal; Lindsay Delventhal; Morgan Delventhal; Lauren Delventhal; Jade (Dave) Scibilia; Noah Cappadonia; Dylan Cappadonia and his great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.  He was predeceased by his brothers and sisters Rose, Josephine, Joseph, Louis, Charlie, Philip, and Sam.

Clarence R. “Ray” Conine – 78 – of 23 Adsit St., Hornell, died unexpectedly Friday morning (January 31, 2013) at his home.

A native & life resident of Hornell, he was born June 29, 1935 and was the son of Fred & Meta (Skinner) Conine.

Ray was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1953) and later attended Ithaca College.  He was employed for several years at JC Penney’s in Hornell  and for many years served as an insurance agent in the Hornell area.  For several years he was employed as assistant manager at the former Security Trust Bank in Hornell.

Ray always had a love of animals and for many years owned & operated riverside Pet Store in Hornell.  Throughout the years he owned & cared for many dogs.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Betty Manry.

Ray was married for 55 years to the former Rose Cartella who survives.  Also surviving are 3 sons, Alan (Becky) Conine of Rochester, Andy (Kathy) Conine of Hornell and Charlie Conine of Rochester; 4 grandchildren, Kirsten (Evan) Cogansparger, Marissa (Ryan) Goodwin, Michael Conine and Kyle Conine; 4 great-grandchildren; several nieces & nephews.

Susan J. “Sue” Johnson – 58 – of Church St. Court, Hornell, died unexpectedly on Monday (January 27, 2014) at her home.

Born in Buffalo, NY on May 28, 1955, she was the daughter of Dr. Richard & Nancy (Knapp) Smith.

Sue grew up in Bath, NY and was a graduate of Bath Haverling High School (class of 1973).  She attended Alfred State College and later obtained her Registered Nurse’s License at St. James School of Nursing. 

For several years, Sue was employed as a secretary at Shults & Shults Law Office in Hornell.  She also was employed for several years as a registered nurse at St. James Mercy Hospital.

Sue had been a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a member of St. Ann’s Church.  More recently, she attended Bible Study at the Community Center of Church Street Court.  She loved to knit, crochet, read, arts & crafts, watch movies, talk about life, and cherished spending time with her family and many friends, including, Sissy & Dan Mahoney.  Recently, Sue was proud and excited to have become a member of the Hornell YMCA.  

Sue was the second oldest of five beautiful sisters, who shared a special bond.  Sue knew exactly what love was — how to give love and how to receive love!!!  She had a contagious laugh and was known for her wonderful sense of humor.  Sue was without a doubt, her children’s biggest fan, taking pride in everything they do.  Over the years, Sue loved attending each and every one of her oldest son Kyle’s sporting events.  It was always Sue rooting the loudest.  She had a genuine love of music and truly loved watching her youngest son, Kurt, perform with his many bands.  She could always be found “front & center” dancing, smiling and simply having a great time.  Sue was extremely proud of her daughter, Keegan and the wonderful wife & mother that she is.  She absolutely adored her 2 beautiful granddaughters, and they adored her just as much.  Grandma Sue cherished every minute she spent with them, and they brought each other such joy. 

In addition to her parents, Sue was preceded in death by her sister, Patricia Eichler; her brother-in-law, Alan Eichler; and her nephew, Graham Andrus.

Surviving are her “K-Kids” who she loved “a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck” — daughter, Keegan Eliza (Tim) Manchester of Leominster, MA; sons, Kyle Jeffery (Brittney Tracy) Johnson of Rochester and Kurt Greggery Johnson of Rochester; her former husband & friend, Jeffery (Carla) Johnson of Hornell; 3 sisters, Anne (Warren) Smith Abbey of Bath, Karen (Tom) Andrus of Bath and Kathy (Dan Crossman) Smith of Bath; her grandchildren Anna Susan Manchester and Katherine Lucille Manchester (who she loved & adored); her aunts, Helen Jane Bartron, Sister Mary Jean Smith and Lucille Knapp; father-in-law, William “Wallboard” (Arlene Dennis) Johnson; in-laws, William (Gail) Johnson and Greggery (Liz) Johnson; her beloved nieces & nephews, Vanessa (Dan) Spitulnik, Jaime (Scott) Milanovich, Matthew (Amanda) Johnson, Erica (Joe) Saliceti, Jade Andrus & Brandon Mambelli; along with several cousins, great nieces and nephews.

Lois J. Hendee – 82 – 8063 Route 21, Hornell (Town of Fremont) died early Tuesday morning (January 21, 2014) at St. James Mercy Hospital following a long illness.

Born in Pennsylvania on November 29, 1931, she was the daughter of Albert & Doris Young.

Lois grew up in the Canaseraga – Arkport area and was a graduate of Arkport Central School (class of 1949).  She later earned her Associate’s Degree from Alfred State College (class of 1951).

In her younger years, Lois had been employed as a Lab Technician at Dansville Hospital, Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester and at the former Karl Clinic in Hornell.

She was married on December 31, 1955 to Jack Hendee who survives.  Along with her husband, Lois was active in the day-to-day operation of Hendee Homestead Dairy Farm in Fremont.  She also enjoyed spending time in the kitchen, cooking & baking for her family & neighbors.

Lois was preceded in death by her brothers, Lyle Young & Richard Young; her daughter-in-law, Theresa Hendee; sister-in-law, Janet Young;

In addition to her husband, Jack, survivors include 4 sons, Sam (Kate) Hendee of Hornell, Dave (Sue) Hendee of Almond, Jack (Linda) Hendee of Hornell and Joe Hendee of Prattsburgh; her sister, Shirley (Don “Red”) Stewart of Dansville; her sister-in-law, Karen Young; 9 grandchildren; several nieces & nephews.
