Leo A. Hillman – 86 – of 50 East Main St., Hornell, died early Saturday morning (May 24, 2014) at his home, following a long illness.

A native & life resident of Hornell, he was born September 9, 1927 and was the son of Robert & Rose (McCarthy) Hillman.

Leo attended Hornell High School and later served his country as a member of the US Navy.  He was employed for 37 years as a service repair technician for Sears in Hornell, retiring in 1989. 

He was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church.  Leo enjoyed hunting & fishing and, as a dedicated sports fan, also enjoyed watching football and baseball — especially the New York Mets.

Leo was preceded in death by 2 sons, Michael who died January 24, 1988 and Thomas who died April 7, 1994; and also his brother, John Hillman who died September 18, 2008.

He was married on February 24, 1951 (63 years) to the former Isabelle Perrin who survives.  Also surviving are his daughter, Roseanne Hunt of Hornell; 2 sons, Steven (Sandy) Hillman of Mt. Shasta, CA and Joseph (Karen) Hillman of Plantation, FL; 1 brother, Robert (Eleanor) Hillman of Hornell; 1 sister, Rosemary Walton of Ashville, NC; 9 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; several nieces & nephews.

The family of Leo A. Hillman will receive friends on Monday from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 10:00 AM at St. Ann’s Church with burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Leo’s family request that memorial contributions in his name be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

In honor of Leo’s service to his country by serving in the US Navy, the American Flag at the Dagon Funeral Home will be flown at half-staff.

William Burnell “Wallboard” Johnson – 92 – of 48 Scott St., Hornell, passed away ­­­on Tuesday (May 20, 2014) at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, following a brief illness.

Born in Bradford, Pennsylvania on March 22, 1922, he was a son of Hugh F. and Florence (Disney) Johnson.

Bill grew up in Hornell and was a graduate of St. Ann’s School and later graduated from Hornell High School (class of 1941).  He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U. S. Coast Guard from 1942 – 1945 in the Asia-Pacific Theater of War. He was employed for 42 years at the Erie Railroad, Union Pacific Railroad, the Erie Lackawanna Railroad, retiring as an engineer from the Delaware and Hudson Railroad in 1983.

He was married on December 7, 1946  at St. Ignatius Loyola Church to the former Doris McKee who died on January 27, 1989.  Together they owned and operated Terry’s Tavern in Hornell for 13 years.

Bill was one of the original parishioners of St. Ignatius Loyola Church. He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus, the Arthur Cunningham Post of the American Legion, the J. J. Mooney Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Hornell Association and a 48 year member of the Hornell Elks Lodge # 364.

Bill had a deep love for his family, and took great joy in all family events and activities. He loved watching his sons and later his grandchildren participate in sports, musical and dance events. He was an avid golfer and a charter member of Twin Hickory Golf Club.  

Lucy M. Solo – (85) – of 106 Elizabeth St., Hornell, died Tuesday morning (May 20, 2014) at McAuley Manor following a brief illness.

A native & life resident of Hornell, she was born May 1, 1929, and was the daughter of Frank & Mary (Falco) Miller.

Lucy was a graduate of St. Ann’s School and later graduated from Hornell High School (Class of 1949).  Following high school she earned her beautician’s license from Continental School of Cosmetology in Buffalo.  In 1950 Lucy began working as a beautician at Pat Rapp Beauty Salon and within one year purchased the business, re-naming it LuAnn’s Beauty Shop.   She owned & operated the business for the next 51 years.

She was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church.  She was also a member of AZB Sorority.

Lucy was preceded in death by 3 brothers, Joseph Miller, Anthony “Tony” Miller and Neil “Ed” Miller; 3 sisters, Rose Schiavi, Ann Miller and Janet “Jennie” Grassi.

She was married on July 21, 1951 to Francis “Joe” Solo who survives.  Also surviving are 1 daughter, Judy (Steve) Lamb of Hornell; 2 sons, Fran Solo of Endicott, NY and Christopher Solo of Endicott, NY; 4 grandchildren, Amy (Phil) Quattrini, Matthew Lamb, Erik (Samantha) Solo and Emily Solo; 2 great-grandchildren, Logan Quattrini & Makenzi Quattrini; 1 great-grandson “on the way”; along with several nieces & nephews.

Mark Herbert Zuschin passed away on December 10, 2013 at his home in Rochester, NY. 

He was in New Rochelle, NY on April 11, 1960 and was the son of Herbert Louis & Anne (Farnan) Zuschin.

Mark is survived by his parents, Herbert & Anne Zuschin of Arkport; his sisters, Kathryn Zuschin of San Francisco, CA and Mary Anne (Paul) Tytka of Buffalo, NY; his brother, Paul (Dana) Zuschin of San Diego, CA; 2 nephews, Matthew & Sean Tytka of Buffalo.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 11:00 AM at St. Brendan’s Church in Almond with Fr. Sean DiMaria officiating.  Burial will be in the family plot at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Rexville at a later date.

Timothy P. “Tim” Mahany – 60 – of New Jersey, formerly of Arkport, died unexpectedly early Thursday morning (May 8, 2014) at his home.

Born in Hornell on September 27, 1953, he was the son of Patrick & Phyllis (Milliard) Mahany.

Tim grew up in Arkport and was a graduate of Arkport Central School (class of 1972).  Following high school, he began working in the family potato farm (Patrick E. Mahany & Sons Inc) and was involved in the day-to-day operation of the business.

After working on the family farm for a few years, Tim enlisted in the US Army and served his country for 4 years.  While in the Army, he was stationed in Germany for about a year.  Following his discharge from the military, Tim returned to Arkport and for several years continued working with his father & family on the potato farm. 

Levi Peterson, newborn son of Tom & Katie Peterson of 27 Morningside Dr., Painted Post, formerly of Almond, was taken by the Angels to live life eternal in Heaven on the day of his birth (May 8, 2014).

Although his time on earth was brief, Levi was truly a gift from God and was loved by his entire family.

In addition to his parents, Tom & Katie, survivors include his maternal grandparents, John & Cindy Flint of Almond; paternal grandmother, Dr. Rhonda Peterson of Almond; maternal great-grandmother, Joanne Flint of Canisteo; his aunts & uncles, Chad Giglio of Hornell, Kristi & Brian Marlatt of Almond and Shelley Flint of Almond; several cousins; great aunts & great uncles.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 4:00 PM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY with Deacon Robert McCormick officiating.  Private committal services will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Almond, NY.

Jean Paul Mauro –  83 – of 94 East Main St., Hornell, died early Thursday morning (May 8, 2014) at her home, following a long illness.

She was born in Hornell on October 23, 1930 as Helen Jean Paul, but was known as Jean.  She was the daughter of Edmund & Mary (Ciancaglini) Paul.

Jean grew up in Hornell and was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1950).  While in high school, she served as secretary of her class in her sophomore, junior, and senior years and was a member of the National Honor Society.  During her high school years, she was employed at the former Elmhurst Dairy and also worked as a secretary for Cameron Insurance of Hornell.  Following high school, Jean was employed as a telephone operator for Bell telephone for about 5 years.

Alvy J. Lucas – (89) – of 8264 Route 961F, Arkport, died Tuesday morning (April 29, 2014) at Hornell Gardens, following a brief illness.

Born in Olean, NY on December 3, 1924, he was the son of Alvy & Minnie (Hoffmire) Lucas.

Alvy grew up in Olean where he attended Olean High School.  During WWII, Alvy left high school to join the US Navy.  He served his country from 1942 – 1946 during the Pacific Theater of Operations as a photographer, pharmacist’s mate, hospital apprentice and surgical technician.

During his adult life, Alvy resided in many locations, including Philadelphia, Buffalo, Rochester, Arkport, Wayland, DeRuyter and Virginia, returning to the Arkport area about a year ago.  He had been employed for many years as a sheet metal worker for Local #46 in Rochester on numerous jobs.

He was a lifelong member of the American Legion with memberships in Honeoye, DeRuyter, Truxton and Wayland where he served as commander.  Alvy also served as commander for the 6th District of New York State.  He was a former member of the Hornell Eagles Club and VFW.

Linda E. Gonzales – 66 – of 10 Sawyer Street Site, Hornell, died Tuesday afternoon (April 22, 2014) at Rochester General Hospital following a long illness.

Born in Sonyea, NY on October 6, 1947, she was the daughter of Raphael Gonzales and the former Josephine Jones.

Linda resided in the Hornell – Wayland area for most of her life.  She was a member of the Women of the Moose where she enjoyed playing “games of chance”.  Linda loved music, listening to live bands & dancing.  She also enjoyed attending plays and other theatrical productions.  She loved playing bingo.  Her greatest pleasures came from spending time with her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Gene Gonzales; her grandson, David Matthew Stoddard; and step father, Frank Galvan.

Kenneth P. “Ken” Davies – 74 – of 9582 State Route 36, Arkport, died Sunday evening (April 20, 2014) at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, following a long illness.

Born in Rochester on August 1, 1939, he was the son of Leonard & Alberta (Miller) Davies.

Ken grew up in the Rochester area of Irondequoit and was a graduate of Edison Tech High School (class of 1957).  He attended the University of Miami in Miami, FL where he played (as a running back) for the Miami Hurricane football team.  After being sidelined by an injury on the football field, Ken joined the US Marine Corp, serving his country from 1959-1963.  

Following his honorable discharge from the Marines, Ken served as an insurance investigator for 19 years for Equifax of Rochester, NY.  In the mid 1980’s, he built Gazebo Golf in Hornell, featuring a miniature golf course along with a driving range.  He owned & operated the business for about five years.  In the late 1980’s he built another miniature golf course / driving range called PK Putters in Geneva, NY.  He operated the business until the time of his death.
