Gerald H. “Jerry” Powers – 87 – of 18 Mill St., Almond, NY died Saturday afternoon (August 13, 2022) at Hornell Gardens, following a long illness.
Born in Hornell on September 19, 1934, he was the son of Albert & Cecile (Robertson) Powers.
Jerry grew up in Hornell and was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1954). After high school graduation, he resided in Lockport, NY for several years working at Harrison Radiator.
He was a veteran of the US Army, serving his country from 1957 – 1959. Following his honorable discharge from the army, Jerry lived in Corning for several years and for over 35 years resided in Campbell, NY. He was employed in many capacities at Ingersoll Rand Corporation in Painted Post, retiring in 1998 as a parts inspector. He has resided in Almond since 1998.
Jerry was a former member of the Hornell American Legion and throughout the years was an avid golfer, playing in several leagues in Corning and enjoying many golf courses in the area. He also loved horse racing, especially going to Batavia Downs and Buffalo Raceway with his brother-in-law who owned several race horses. He was often seen with his lifelong friend Jack Generalli also from Hornell.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Duane Powers and his sister, Helen Hendershot.
On August 24, 1957, Jerry married the former Carolyn Bird who survives. Also surviving are 3 sons, Dale (Carrie) Powers of Baden, PA, Jeff Powers of Norwalk, CT and Jamie (Trish) Powers of Vidalia, GA; 1 brother, Gary (Sue) Powers of Hornell; 5 grandchildren, Ashley (Tim) Hoban, Greg (Michelle Skowron) Powers, Drew (Chelsea Bello) Powers, Riley Powers and Claire Powers; 2 great-grandchildren, Kairi Hoban and Eliyanah Hoban; several nieces & nephews.
The family of Gerald H. “Jerry” Powers will receive friends on Thursday from 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY. A Memorial Service with military honors will be held at the conclusion of calling hours at 5:00 PM with Deacon Robert McCormick officiating. Final interment will be in Alfred-Rural Cemetery, Alfred Station, NY.
Jerry’s family request that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name be made to the American Heart Association, PO Box 3049, Syracuse, NY 13220. Memorial forms will be available at the Dagon Funeral Home.
In recognition of Jerry’s service to his country as a member of the US Army, the American Flag at the Dagon Funeral Home will be flown at half-staff.
