Mark S. Sawczyszyn – 57 – a resident of Southview IRA in Wayland, NY, formerly of Hornell, died unexpectedly Thursday morning (May 17, 2012) at Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville, where he was taken after being stricken at home.

Born in Hornell on May 12, 1955, he was the son of Stephen & Elnora (Butler) Sawczyszyn.

A resident of Hornell for most of his life, Mark moved to Wayland about 8 years ago.  He had been a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church.  While residing in Wayland, he enjoyed the time that he had spent working at the Dogwood Day Service in Dansville.  He later looked forward to spending time at the Adult Day Care at McAuley Manor in Hornell.

Robert J. “Bob” Argentieri – (86) – of 1130 Airport Road, Hornell, died Thursday morning (May 10, 2012) at Hornell Gardens, following a long illness.

A native & life resident of Hornell, he was born November 11, 1925, and was the son of Silvino & Dorothy (Feeney) Argentieri.

Bob was a graduate of St. Ann’s School and later graduated from Hornell High School (class of 1944).  

From 1944 -1961 he was employed as an accountant at the Erie Accounting Bureau.  In 1961 he began working as a mail carrier for the US Postal Service, a position he held until 1984.  From 1984 – 1992 he worked at Off Track Betting in Hornell.

Bob was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church, where he served as an usher for many years.  He had also been a member of the St. Ann’s Parish Council and served on the finance committee.  He was a member of the Hornell Knights of Columbus an also the Hornell Elks Lodge and had served on the Arkport School Board.  Bob was also an avid Buffalo Bills and New York Yankee Fan.

Michael J. “Mike” Beecher – 42 – of 8008 State Route 36, Arkport, died unexpectedly on Tuesday at his home.

Born in Hornell on February 18, 1970, he was the son of Harold & Marilyn “Virginia” (Borden) Beecher.

Mike grew up in Canaseraga, NY and was a graduate of Canaseraga Central School (class of 1988).  He was a veteran of the US Army, serving his country from 1988 – 1990.

For the past 12 years, Mike was employed at Gunlocke Corporation in Wayland in various capacities, most recently as an upholsterer. 

He was an avid Denver Broncos fan and especially enjoyed rooting for his favorite player, John Elway.  He also enjoyed NASCAR with his favorite driver being Kyle Buisch.  Mike also liked hunting, bowling and working on cars.  His true love was for his family, especially his children.

Harold R. “Bob” Lieb, JR – 57 – of 13 Cottage Ave., Hornell, died unexpectedly Thursday morning (May 3, 2012) at his home.

Born in Hornell on May 14, 1954, he was the son of Harold & Jean (O’Connor) Lieb.

Bob grew up in Hornell and was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1972).  He attended Alfred State College and was a graduate of Corning Community College where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering Technology. 

He resided in Alaska (Juno, Valdez & Fairbanks) for many years where he was employed by the State of Alaska.  He also resided in Penn Yan for several years.  After returning to Hornell about 15 years ago, Bob worked for the New York State Department of Transportation as an engineer in the Bridge Department.  He moved to Florida for about 1 ½ years and, again, returned to Hornell about 3 ½ years ago.

Marian O. Moretti – (93) – of 73 Elm St., Hornell, died Sunday afternoon (April 29, 2012) at McAuley Manor, following a brief illness.

A native & life resident of Hornell, she was born April 12, 1919 and was the daughter of Lawrence & Angelina (Massi) Lodato.

Marion was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1938).  She and her husband, Francis, owned & operated Moretti’s Snack Bar which later became The Coffee Cup and is now Marino’s Restaurant.  For several years she worked at Moretti’s Liquor Store.

She was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church.  Marion had been a member of Ladies of Columbus, the Beato Angelo Society, St. James Women’s Board and the Italian-American Women’s Club.

Lynn A. Brown – (81) – of 11 Sullivan St., Arkport, died Wednesday afternoon (March 21, 2012) at his home, following a long illness.

Born in Scio, NY on April 3, 1930, he was the son of Richard & Lila (Watson) Brown. 

Lynn was a graduate of the former Belmont Central School (class of 1948) and was a veteran of the US Army having been stationed in Germany during the Korean Conflict.  He has resided in Arkport since 1965.

Paula J. Burns – 57 – of 23 ½ Cottage Ave., Hornell, died Tuesday afternoon (March 20, 2012) at her home, following a long illness. 

Born in Lock Haven, PA on June 27, 1954, she was the daughter of James & Nellie (Geyer) Burns. 

Paula resided in Pennsylvania for most of her life and has lived in Hornell for the past 12 years.  She was employed for about 10 years as a cashier at Sugar Creek on Seneca Street in Hornell. 

Surviving are her son, Albert (Kristine) Hazzard of Texas; her daughter, Beatrice Hazzard of Hornell; 1 brother, James Burns of Hornell; 1 sister, Linda Burns of Pennsylvania; 4 grandchildren, Mitchel Lewis, Ian Lewis, Andrew Hazzard and Emily Hazzard; aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces & nephews. 

At Paula’s request there will be no calling hours or services.  Funeral arrangements are in care of the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY.

Theodore D. “Ted” Root – 79 – of 1 South Main St., Almond, died Saturday afternoon (March 3, 2012) at Hornell Gardens, following a long illness.

Born in Livonia, NY on February 25, 1933, he was the son of Donald & Loleta Root.

Ted grew up in Atlanta, NY and was a graduate of Naples High School (Class of 1951).  He later graduated from New York State Trooper Academy in Syracuse.  He was a veteran of the US Navy, serving his country during the Korean Conflict.  He has resided in Almond for the past 53 years.

From 1962 – 1982, Ted served as a New York State Trooper working out of the Almond Sub Station for most of those years.  Following his retirement from the Troopers, he was employed for several years as a bartender at the Hornell Elks Lodge and for about 15 years worked for AL Blades in Hornell. 

Marjorie Elizabeth Murphy – 88 – a resident of Shore Winds Nursing Facility in Rochester, formerly of Hornell, died early Saturday morning (February 25, 2012) at Unity Hospital in Rochester following a brief illness.

Born in Hornell on July 6, 1923, she was the daughter of Samuel & Elizabeth (Murphy) Sutton.

Marjorie grew up in Corning and was a graduate of St. Mary’s Catholic School and later graduated from Corning Free academy (Class of 1940). 

She returned to Hornell in the early 1940s where she resided until the early 1970s.  Throughout the years, Marjorie lived in several locations, including Ohio & Bath, NY and has resided in the Rochester area for the past five years. 

While living in Hornell, Marjorie was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church.  While in Corning, she was a member of St. Mary’s Church.  She had also been a member of the Legion of Mary, Catholic Daughters of America and Right to Life.  She enjoyed watching sporting events on television and especially enjoyed watching her children & later her grand children playing sports.

Marjorie was married on September 16, 1941 to William F. Murphy, SR who died in 1992.  She was also preceded in death by her son, Joseph E. Murphy (died 2002); two infant sons (died 1949 & 1959); her grandson, Joseph T. Murphy (died 2006); her brother, Francis B. Sutton (died 1992) and her son in law, Michael Callan (died 2009).

Surviving are 3 daughters, Joy Callan of Ohio, Margie (Gene) Liwa of Churchville and Mary (Paul) Roberts of Henrietta; 4 sons, William (Donna) Murphy of Tennessee, John (Kathy) Murphy of Tennessee, Robert (Sheryl “Sam”) Murphy of Ohio and Thomas Murphy of Ohio; her daughter-in-law, Bobbi Sue Murphy of Hornell; 1 sister, Mary Lou Tremaine of Horseheads; 18 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews & cousins.

The family of Marjorie Elizabeth Murphy will receive friends on Tuesday from 9:00 AM until 10:00 AM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY.  A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:30 AM at St. Ann’s Church.  Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Corning, NY.

Marjorie’s family request that memorial contributions in her name be made to either St. Ann’s Church, 27 Erie Ave., Hornell, NY 14843 or to the Hornell YMCA Pool Fund, 18 Center St., Hornell, NY 14843.

Dennis E. Dailey – 52 – of 42 Hartshorn St., Hornell, died early Friday morning (February 17, 2012) at his home, following a long illness, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Elmira on February 1, 1960, he was the son of Thomas “Paul” & Patricia (Moylan) Dailey. 

Growing up in Hornell, Dennis was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1979).  He was employed for several years as a mechanic at Wilkins RV and later worked for about 8 years in the Dye House at Stern & Stern Textile.  For several years, Dennis was employed in many capacities at Morrison – Knudson (MK) refurbishing rail cars and most recently worked at TTA in Hornell refurbishing rail car wheels.
