Marjorie Elizabeth Murphy – 88 – a resident of Shore Winds Nursing Facility in Rochester, formerly of Hornell, died early Saturday morning (February 25, 2012) at Unity Hospital in Rochester following a brief illness.
Born in Hornell on July 6, 1923, she was the daughter of Samuel & Elizabeth (Murphy) Sutton.
Marjorie grew up in Corning and was a graduate of St. Mary’s Catholic School and later graduated from Corning Free academy (Class of 1940).
She returned to Hornell in the early 1940s where she resided until the early 1970s. Throughout the years, Marjorie lived in several locations, including Ohio & Bath, NY and has resided in the Rochester area for the past five years.
While living in Hornell, Marjorie was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church. While in Corning, she was a member of St. Mary’s Church. She had also been a member of the Legion of Mary, Catholic Daughters of America and Right to Life. She enjoyed watching sporting events on television and especially enjoyed watching her children & later her grand children playing sports.
Marjorie was married on September 16, 1941 to William F. Murphy, SR who died in 1992. She was also preceded in death by her son, Joseph E. Murphy (died 2002); two infant sons (died 1949 & 1959); her grandson, Joseph T. Murphy (died 2006); her brother, Francis B. Sutton (died 1992) and her son in law, Michael Callan (died 2009).
Surviving are 3 daughters, Joy Callan of Ohio, Margie (Gene) Liwa of Churchville and Mary (Paul) Roberts of Henrietta; 4 sons, William (Donna) Murphy of Tennessee, John (Kathy) Murphy of Tennessee, Robert (Sheryl “Sam”) Murphy of Ohio and Thomas Murphy of Ohio; her daughter-in-law, Bobbi Sue Murphy of Hornell; 1 sister, Mary Lou Tremaine of Horseheads; 18 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews & cousins.
The family of Marjorie Elizabeth Murphy will receive friends on Tuesday from 9:00 AM until 10:00 AM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:30 AM at St. Ann’s Church. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Corning, NY.
Marjorie’s family request that memorial contributions in her name be made to either St. Ann’s Church, 27 Erie Ave., Hornell, NY 14843 or to the Hornell YMCA Pool Fund, 18 Center St., Hornell, NY 14843.
