Dorothy Ormsby Argentieri,76, of 5495 Elm Valley Road, Alfred Station, died Monday, November 19, 2012, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Hornell on August 14, 1936, she was the daughter of Rowland and Guinevere (Wilcox) Ormsby.
Dorothy grew up in the Alfred area and was a graduate of Alfred Almond Central School. In 1958, she graduated from Alfred University with a degree in Psychology. She received her Master’s Degree in Education from SUNY Geneseo in 1962.
She was married on November 28, 1959, to William “Chop” Argentieri. Together they resided in Hornell for many years and have lived in Alfred Station since 1997.
Her teaching career began in Pittsford, NY where she taught kindergarten. She also taught kindergarten in Canisteo and Hornell. For many years Dorothy was employed at SUNY Alfred, first as a reading specialist and later as Director of Human Resources. She retired in 2002.
Dorothy served as a volunteer and member of many organizations, including: the American Association of University Women; Planned Parenthood; Camp Fire Girls, where she also served as a group leader for her daughter; the Hornell Library Board; Sigma Chi Nu Sorority of Alfred University. She was a Life Member of Baker’s Bridge Historical Society. She was a “die-hard” New York Yankees fan and also an avid Buffalo Bills fan – having been a season ticket holder for many years. Dorothy was a phenomenal Bridge player, recognized as a Life Master by the American Contract Bridge League. She also enjoyed playing golf and tennis. She loved to travel, especially to visit her children and grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her brothers-in-law, Heinz Zydor and Robert Argentieri.
Surviving are her husband, William “Chop” Argentieri; 2 daughters, Judy Argentieri (Ben Watts) of Champaign, IL and Kate (Kevin) Nawracaj of Chicago, IL; a son, Matt, of Hornell; 4 sisters, Adele Zydor of New Jersey, Elizabeth Hall of Hornell, Alberta (Dick) Brown of Clarence Center and Eleanor (Bob) Rink of North Hornell; 2 brothers, Rowland (Ginny) Ormsby of La Grange, IN and William (Teddy) Ormsby of Hornell; her in-laws, Francis (Mary Ann) Argentieri, James (Phyllis) Argentieri, Mary Agnes (Don) Crosby and Ginny Argentieri, all of Hornell; 5 grandchildren, Olivia Watts, Samuel Watts, Ella Nawracaj, Ethan Nawracaj and Elise Nawracaj; many nieces and nephews.
At Dorothy’s request there will be no calling hours. A Memorial Service will be held at United Presbyterian Church, 150 Main Street, Hornell, at 10:30am on Friday, November 23, 2012. Funeral arrangements are in care of the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY.
In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to “Alfred University” and will be designated to the University’s Baccalaureate Scholarship Program in memory of Dorothy. Checks should be made payable to “Alfred University”, and sent to University Relations, 1 Saxon Drive, Alfred, NY 14802.
