Paul E. Griswold – (79) – formerly of 71 Church St. Court, Hornell, died Sunday morning (January 6, 2013) at McAuley Manor where he had resided for the past 6 years.

A native & life resident of Hornell, he was born January 13, 1933, and was the son of Harold & Florence (Dougherty) Griswold.

Paul was a graduate of Hornell High School and later received his Associate’s Degree in Science from Alfred State College. 

He was employed for a short time at the former Erie Railroad and also the Hornell Evening Tribune.  For many years he served as “desk clerk” for the Hornell YMCA, retiring in 1982. 

He was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church.  He was also a life member of the Hornell Knights of Columbus.

Roland D. Hale – 82 – formerly of Hamilton Hill Rd., Alfred Station, died Sunday afternoon (December 30, 2012) in Chicago, IL, where he has resided for the past 3 years.

Born in Oakfield, NY on May 24, 1931, he was the son of Edward & Eda (Bossler) Hale.

Roland grew up in Oakfield and was a graduate of Oakfield High School (class of 1947).  He attended Buffalo State College for 1 year before enlisting in the US Navy.  He served his country for 4 years during the Korean Conflict before being honorably discharged.

Following his discharge from the US Navy, Roland returned to Buffalo State College where he earned his Teaching Degree and also a Degree in Chemistry & General Science.  He later earned his Master’s Degree in Chemistry.

Ferdinando L. “Fred” Giovanniello – 70 – of 23 Pine St., Hornell, died unexpectedly Wednesday (January 2, 2012) at his home.

Born in Italy on April 10, 1942, he was the son of Americo & Pasqualina (Capozzi) Giovanniello.

Fred has resided in the United States since he was 14 years old.  He lived in Brooklyn for several years and on Long Island for many years.  He has resided in Hornell for over 25 years.

He enjoyed bowling and for several years bowled for Giovanni’s Team.  Fred loved gardening (both flower garden and vegetable garden) and also enjoyed woodworking. 

Eva A. Grimm – (70) – of 29 Cottage Ave., Hornell, formerly of Hill St., died Sunday afternoon (December 23, 2012) at her home following a long illness.

Born in Hornell on October 23, 1942, she was the daughter of Harold & Eunice (Moore) Graham and the step-daughter of Roy Graber.

Eva grew up in Hornell, Buffalo and Addison and was a graduate of Addison High School (class of 1961).  She later attended St. James School of Nursing and for a time was employed as a nurse’s aide at St. James Hospital.

She was a former member of United Presbyterian Church and had been a member of the Hornell VFW, AMVETS, American Legion, Hornell Association and the Hornell Moose Lodge.  She enjoyed cooking, crocheting and spending time with her family.

Rose M. LaFaro – (92) – a resident of Hornell Gardens, formerly of 13 Sawyer St. Site, Hornell, died early Monday morning (December 24, 2012) at Highland Hospital in Rochester, following a brief illness.

A native & livelong resident of Hornell, she was born March 6th, 1920, and was the daughter of George & Anna (DeSteffano) LaFaro.  Rose attended Bryant School and later Hornell High School.  She had been employed as a dietitian’s helper for about 5 years at the original Bethesda Hospital and later was employed as a cook for 28 years by several Hornell Restaurants, including the Hotel Sherwood, Ponce DeLeon and the Sunset Inn, retiring in 1979.

John N. “Floyd” Dugo – 63 – of 6948 Dennis Ave. Ext., Hornell, died Monday afternoon (December 17, 2012) at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, PA following a long illness.

A native & life resident of Hornell, he was born July 23, 1949 and was the son of John & Marie (Parmelee) Dugo.

Floyd was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1967) where he excelled on the football field, playing for the Hornell Red Raiders.  Following graduation, he enlisted in the US Marine Corps where he honorably served his country from 1968 – 1971.  While stationed in Viet Nam, Floyd served in communications as a radio operator.  During his military service, he received numerous medals, including the Viet Nam Cross Gallantry with Palm and the Combat Action Ribbon.

He was employed for about 35 years at the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) as an engineer, retiring about 5 years ago.  He was a member of the Hornell American Legion.

Elizabeth J. “Jean” Hanks – 86 – of 359 Karrdale Ave., (Knoll Crest Rd.), Almond, died Monday afternoon (December 17, 2012) at her home, following a long illness.

 Born in Wellsville, NY on September 2, 1926, she was the daughter of Patrick “Henry” & Sara Finola (Wiles) Hart.

 Jean grew up in Wellsville and was a graduate of Immaculate Conception Parochial School and later graduated from Wellsville High School (class of 1941). 

While living in Wellsville, she had been employed as a telephone operator for New York Telephone Company.  From 1944 – 1953 Jean resided in Alfred and has lived in Almond for the past 60 years.

Angela M. Palazzo – (94) – formerly of 106 Elizabeth St., died Monday evening (December 3, 2012) at McAuley Manor where she has resided for the past 12 years.

Born in Hornell on October 19, 1918, she was the daughter of Frank & Mary (Grieco) Gallicchio.  Angela was a graduate of St. Ann’s School and Hornell High School.  She had been employed for several years as a weaver at Stern & Stern Textile (formerly Huguets).

On July 13, 1963, she married Dominic Palazzo who died in 1985.  Together they resided in Endicott, New York.  Angela returned to Hornell in 1994.  While in Endicott, Angela was a communicant of St. Anthony’s Church and a member of the Ladies of Columbus and Sons of Italy.  While residing in Hornell, she was a communicant of St. Ann’s Church, a member of the Ladies of Columbus, Catholic Daughters of America and a member of the Italian & American Woman’s Club (formerly Sons of Italy auxiliary).

Dorothy Ormsby Argentieri,76, of 5495 Elm Valley Road, Alfred Station, died Monday, November 19, 2012, surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Hornell on August 14, 1936, she was the daughter of Rowland and Guinevere (Wilcox) Ormsby.

Dorothy grew up in the Alfred area and was a graduate of Alfred Almond Central School.  In 1958, she graduated from Alfred University with a degree in Psychology.  She received her Master’s Degree in Education from SUNY Geneseo in 1962.

She was married on November 28, 1959, to William “Chop” Argentieri.  Together they resided in Hornell for many years and have lived in Alfred Station since 1997.

Her teaching career began in Pittsford, NY where she taught kindergarten. She also taught kindergarten in Canisteo and Hornell.  For many years Dorothy was employed at SUNY Alfred, first as a reading specialist and later as Director of Human Resources.  She retired in 2002.

Dorothy served as a volunteer and member of many organizations, including: the American Association of University Women; Planned Parenthood; Camp Fire Girls, where she also served as a group leader for her daughter; the Hornell Library Board; Sigma Chi Nu Sorority of Alfred University. She was a Life Member of Baker’s Bridge Historical Society.  She was a “die-hard” New York Yankees fan and also an avid Buffalo Bills fan – having been a season ticket holder for many years.  Dorothy was a phenomenal Bridge player, recognized as a Life Master by the American Contract Bridge League.  She also enjoyed playing golf and tennis.  She loved to travel, especially to visit her children and grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her brothers-in-law, Heinz Zydor and Robert Argentieri.

Surviving are her husband, William “Chop” Argentieri; 2 daughters, Judy Argentieri (Ben Watts) of Champaign, IL and Kate (Kevin) Nawracaj of Chicago, IL; a son, Matt, of Hornell; 4 sisters, Adele Zydor of New Jersey, Elizabeth Hall of Hornell, Alberta (Dick) Brown of Clarence Center and Eleanor (Bob) Rink of North Hornell; 2 brothers, Rowland (Ginny) Ormsby of La Grange, IN and William (Teddy) Ormsby of Hornell; her in-laws, Francis (Mary Ann) Argentieri, James (Phyllis) Argentieri, Mary Agnes (Don) Crosby and Ginny Argentieri, all of Hornell; 5 grandchildren, Olivia Watts, Samuel Watts, Ella Nawracaj, Ethan Nawracaj and Elise Nawracaj; many nieces and nephews.

At Dorothy’s request there will be no calling hours.  A Memorial Service will be held at United Presbyterian Church, 150 Main Street, Hornell, at 10:30am on Friday, November 23, 2012.  Funeral arrangements are in care of the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY.

In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to “Alfred University” and will be designated to the University’s Baccalaureate Scholarship Program in memory of Dorothy.  Checks should be made payable to “Alfred University”, and sent to University Relations, 1 Saxon Drive, Alfred, NY 14802. Please include a note stating that your gift is in memory of Dorothy Ormsby Argentieri ’58. Gifts may also be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Patricia A. “Pat” Kull – (69) – of 1190 County Route 66, Hornell, NY, died Saturday morning (November 17, 2012) at her home following a long illness.

Born in North Hornell on January 15, 1943, she was the daughter of Leo & Alberta (Patton) Fisher.

Pat grew up in Hornell and was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1961).  Throughout the years she resided in several locations, including Colorado (5 years), Wyoming (5 years), Alaska (17 years) and Florida (10 years).  She returned to Hornell in 2011.

Over the years, Pat had been employed as a cook for several restaurants & sororities, including Sigma Chi Nu Sorority in Alfred.  She enjoyed reading both novels & biographies and in her younger years she enjoyed working in her flower garden.

She was married on March 2, 1963 (47 years) to Robert E. Kull who died April 1st, 2010.  She was also preceded in death by her brother, Leo Fisher.

Surviving are 1 daughter, Trudy L. McKenzie of Wasilla, Alaska; 1 son, Robert W. Kull of Wasilla, Alaska; 1 sister, Jackie Ellis of Arkport; 2 granddaughters, Lindsey McKenzie and Lauren McKenzie; several nieces & nephews.
