Mary R. Fucci, beloved mother & grandmother passed away peacefully early Tuesday morning (May 5, 2015) at her home — the same home in which she was born 100 years ago.  She celebrated her 100th birthday this year with family & friends at a party given in her honor last month at The Main Place in Hornell.

A lifelong resident of Hornell, Mary was born on April 8, 1915, and was the daughter of Leonard & Amelia (Canella) Caruso.

Mary attended Hornell High School and was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church.  She had been a member of the Catholic Daughters of America.

In the early 1960’s, Mary established Fucci’s Pizza Villa in Hornell making her one of the first female business owners in Hornell.  She owned and operated the business until 1977.  She later was employed as a cook for the Masonic Senior Nutrition Program and also served as a volunteer in the Grandparent Program in the elementary schools in the Hornell School District.

Mary was dearly beloved and greatly respected by her children, her family and all that were blessed to know her.  She was a very loving and respectful woman who will be greatly missed by all.

She was married in 1935 to Anthony Fucci who died in 1952.  Mary was also preceded in death by her daughter, Clara Fucci (who died at the age of three); her son, Michael Fucci (died 2012); her grandson, Michael Dempsey (died 1983); her son-in-law, Lawrence Dempsey(died 1990); 4 brothers, Anthony Caruso, Angelo Caruso, Sam “Tato” Caruso and Richard Caruso; 2 sisters, Jenny Marendo and Nancy Guchardi.

Surviving are 3 daughters, Amelia Dempsey of Hamburg, Marjorie (Jim) Blowers of Swain and Maria Ormsby of Brick, NJ; 1 son, Leonard (Diane) Fucci of Hornell; her daughter-in-law, Linda Fucci of Hornell; 2 sisters, Yolonda Rose of Hornell and Josephine Bondi of Canada; 10 grandchildren, Kathleen Dempsey, Larry Dempsey, Colleen Carrow, Anthony Fucci, Lisa Smith, James Blowers, Mary Clark, Bernadette Hunter, Tina Ormsby and Brittany Broderick; 10 great-grandchildren who dearly loved her and called her “Big Ma”; many nieces & nephews.

Sara E. Dries – 85 – of 8616 Wilkins Rd., Arkport, NY, died early Tuesday morning (April 28, 2015, at Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville, following a long illness. 

Born in Talladega, AL., on May 12^th, 1929, she was the daughter of Cornelius & Lillian (Walker) Williams.  

Sara grew up in Talladega and was a graduate of Talladega High School.   She has resided in the Arkport- Burns area since 1953.  Along with her husband, she owned & operated the Tri County Country Store on the Arkport-Dansville Road for over 20 years, retiring in 1989 

She was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church.  Her true joy in life was simply taking care of her grandchildren. 

She was married in 1953 to Gerald J. Dries who died September 28, 2003. She was also preceded in death by her son, Bruce Dries who died April 3, 2014; her granddaughter, Nichole Woodvine; 3 sisters, Mildred McKinney, Linnas Ellison and Louise McKinney. 

Surviving are  2 sons, David (Sara) Dries of Auburn, Pa. and Edward (Fiamma) Dries of Italy; 1 Daughter,  Susan (Lewis) Woodvine of Arkport, N Y; 1 Brother, Waymon Williams of  Ft. Walton Beach, Fl; 16 grandchildren, Kierra Woodvine, Cassandra Woodvine, Michael Woodvine, Joseph Woodvine, David Gerald Dries, Debbie Dunkelberg; Beau Dingeldein, James Dingeldein, Jeb Dingeldein, Rhett Dingeldein, Diana Dries, Claudette Dries, Guilliane Dries, Brittany Patterson, Nick Dries and Tim Dries;  8 great-grandchildren, Allison, Brynn, Devyn, Ethan, Owen, Mason, Nicholas & Erica; several nieces & nephews.

Genevieve “June” D’Apice – (90) – formerly of 7294 North Main St. Ext., Hornell, died Saturday afternoon (March 14, 2015) at Hornell Gardens where she had resided for the past 3 years.

Born in Elmer, PA on June 3, 1924, she was the daughter of Charles & Jenny (VanPelt) Cole.

June grew up in the Canisteo – Adrian area and was a graduate of Canisteo Central School.  She had been employed for several years at the former Dunn’s Drug Store where she served as manager of the fountain.  She later worked in many capacities at Woolworth’s Department Store where she especially enjoyed decorating the Easter Candy.  June had been employed at Modern Cleaners in Hornell and for about 14 years ran the Snack Counter at the Hornell Bowl.  Most recently she helped out at D’Apice Market which was located on the corner of River St. & John St. in Hornell.

As an avid animal lover, June enjoyed feeding the neighborhood dogs & cats and also loved feeding the birds.

June was married on October 24, 1945 to Robert D’Apice who died December 2, 2008.  She was also preceded in death by 2 grandsons, Matthew Luke D’Apice and Randy D’Apice; 2 brothers, Charles Cole & Walter Cole; 3 sisters, Marie Howland, Virginia Cotton & Maple Cole.

George J. Hoeffner – (87) – of 6 Oak Hill St., Arkport, died early Saturday morning (March 14, 2015) at McAuley Manor, following a long illness.

Born in Floral Park, Long Island on February 22, 1928, he was the son of Phillip & Theresa (Wulforst) Hoeffner.

George has resided in the Arkport – Fremont area since the age of 13.  He was a graduate of Arkport Central School (class of 1946).  George was a lifelong potato farmer operating (along with his brothers) Hoeffner Brothers Farms in Fremont, NY and also in Eastville, VA.   In his retirement years, George was affectionately known as “The Corn Man”, for operating a roadside stand on the Almond Road for his brother.

He was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church.  George was a deeply religious man who recited the rosary several times every day; said his daily prayers; and watched daily Mass on television.

George was a 3rd Degree member of the Knights of Columbus.  He loved working on jig-saw puzzles and crossword puzzles.  He also loved working outside and was meticulous about tending to his lawn & shrubberies.

He was married on November 7, 1953 to the former Lorraine Howe who died in 1989.  He was also preceded in death by 2 brothers, Philip Hoeffner and Robert Hoeffner; 3 sisters, Irene Briggs, Marion “Dolly” Dorfer and Theresa Hoeffner.

Surviving are 3 daughters, Roxanne (John) Andrews of Saratoga Springs, NY, Patty (Joseph) Damrath of Hornell and Theresa (Richard) Persichilli of Arkport; 3 sisters,  Helen Burke of Hornell, Emma Potter of Moore, OK and Josephine “Sis” Donahue of Rochester; 1 brother, Thomas (Ann) Hoeffner of Hornell; 5 grandchildren, Benjamin Andrews, Jonathon Andrews, Caitlin (Marty) DiPetta, Colleen Damrath and John Damrath; 1 great-granddaughter, Gracie Anna DiPetta; many nieces & nephews.

From George’s daughters, Roxanne, Patty & Theresa:  Dad spent countless hours putting puzzles together for his family & friends.  These family members and friends were a part of a puzzle that made up dad’s life.  You may never know where you fit in, but always remember that dad’s life would not have been complete without you!!

E. Lorraine Crandall – 87 – of Green Acres Trailer Park, Hornell, died Saturday afternoon (March 7, 2015) at her home, following a long illness.

Born in Hornell on February 1, 1928, she was the daughter of Francis and Elizabeth (Malone) Barnett.

Lorraine was a graduate of Lincoln School and later graduated from Hornell High School (class of 1945).  She was employed as secretary to Executive Vice President at the Hornell Area Chamber of Commerce for several years.  For 28 years she was employed at Alfred State College (SUNY Alfred) as Assistant to the President, serving three presidents: David Huntington, John Hunter, and William Rezak.  She retired in 1997.

She had been a communicant of St. Ignatius Loyola Church and more recently was a member of St. Brendan / St. Jude Parish.  Lorraine had been a member and served as secretary of Women’s Council at Alfred and a member of the Alfred Association of Women and the Friends of the College Cultural Association.  She had been a member, secretary, and vice-president of the Hornell Area Arts Council, and a founder and charter president of the National Secretary’s Association (NSA), now known as International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP).  She had also been a member of the Mayor’s Citizen Advisory Committee of Hornell, the Hornell Business and Professional Women, and a member of Wee Playhouse of Alfred.

Roy T. Sugden – (61) – of 396 Canisteo St., Hornell died Thursday evening (March 5, 2015) at Arnot Ogden Medical Center in Elmira, following a long illness.

Born in Hornell on January 30, 1954, he was the son of Howard & Clarissa “Skip” (Santon) Sugden.

Roy grew up in Hornell and attended Hornell High School and resided in Nebraska for several years, returning to Hornell in about 20 years ago.   He attended Free Methodist Church in Hornell.

Throughout the years he had been employed as a maintanance worker for several area businesses, including the Hornell American Legion and Stop N Shop. 

Rose M. Parks – 67 – of 106 Front St., Hornell, died Friday morning (February 27, 2015) at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester following a long illness.

Born in Hornell on August 31, 1947, she was the daughter of Donald & Phyllis (Woodworth) Wyant.

Rose grew up in Hartsville and attended Canisteo Central School.  Throughout the years, Rose was employed at various businesses and for many years worked as a cashier at Smokin’ Joe’s in Hornell.

She was a former member of the Hornell VFW.  Rose enjoyed playing video poker and other games on her computer and also loved shopping.  Her greatest joy, however, was simply spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Rose was married on November 23, 1968 to Michael “Mike” Parks who survives.  Also surviving are 2 daughters, Marcy Parks of Rochester and Michelle (Scott) Eason of Hornell; 6 sisters, Mary (Joseph) Carbone of Hornell, Barbara (Raymond) Vosburg of Hornell, Bonnie (Rick) Ankenbauer of Erie, PA, Leanne McCarthy of Hornell, Judy (Brad) Okonski of Almond and Eleanor (Michael) Duffy of Hornell; 1 brother, Harold Wyant of Hartsville; 3 grandchildren, Kristi Parks, Michael Fisk and Colbie Eason; 1 great-granddaughter, Rilee Parks; her cousin, Shelly Eckrote; many nieces, nephews & cousins.

Daniel J. “Dan” Racalto – (63) – of 80 Greenwood St., Canisteo, died early Tuesday morning (February 17, 2015) at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, NY, following a Long illness.

Born in Hornell on April 1, 1951, he was the son of Angelo & Catherine (Oakes) Racalto.

Dan was a lifelong resident of Hornell, moving to Canisteo in 2013.  He was a graduate of St. Ann’s School and later graduated from Hornell High School (class of 1969).

He was employed for nearly 20 years as an Insurance Agent for Metropolitan Insurance Company (Met Life) in Hornell.  In 1989, he established Daniel J. Racalto Insurance of Hornell and has owned & operated the agency since that time.

Dan was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and had been a communicant of the former St. Ignatius Loyola Church and later St. Ann’s Church.  For many years he sang in the choir of both churches and also served as a Cantor, Eucharistic Minister and Lector.  He was a former member of the Hornell Knights of Columbus.

Having a great love of sports, Dan was a well known and respected baseball umpire in New York State and Pennsylvania.  For many years he umpired at the high school & college level and also in the Hornell Babe Ruth League.  For several years he umpired at the National Fast Pitch Softball Tournament in Elkland, PA.

For many years, Dan served as a referee for area high school football games and later for the Hornell Midget Football League where he was instrumental in the formation of the Midget League Referee Association.  Throughout the years, Dan was an avid bowler and was a member of several bowling leagues.  In his younger years, he served as a “Pin-Boy” at the former DeLuxe Lanes in Hornell.

In addition to his parents, Dan was preceded in death by his daughter, Lisa Marie Racalto who died in 1972.

He was married on November 6, 1970 to the former Nancy Morse who survives.  Also surviving are his son, Daniel (Katie) Racalto of Novi, MI; his daughter Catherine “Katie” (Miguel) Herrera of Canisteo; 2 brothers, James (Dolores) Racalto of Bremerton, WA and Peter (Addie Lou) Racalto of Bath, NY; 7 sisters, Mary Hanrahan of Hornell, Joyce (Bob) Albright of Myrtle Beach, SC, Rose Marie Racalto of Oklahoma City, OK, Carol (Herman) Archunde of Newark, NY, Marianne (Mike)Matacale of Hornell, Elizabeth “Beth” (Joseph) Zaffran of Buffalo, NY and Catherine (Rick) Bergquist of Hornell; 4 grandchildren, Milly Herrera, Sophia Herrera, Angelo Herrera and Giovanni Herrera; 2 brothers-in-law;Tom (Karen)Morse, of Canisteo,NY Tim (Mary)Morse of Canisteo, NY, 4 sisters-in-law, Cheryl (Gerry) Chaffee of Canisteo, NY, Mary (Steve) Schaumberg of Canisteo, Anne Fronk of Hornell,NY , Bridget (Dave)Morse of Horseheads, NY; his mother in-law Carol Morse of Canisteo, NY  and several aunts, uncles, nieces & nephews and cousins and his  dear friend Father Paul Schnacky.

Anna M. LoCoco – (87) – died Friday evening (February 13, 2015) at Hornell Gardens where she had resided for the past 5 years.

A native & life resident of Hornell, she was born April 21, 1927, and was the daughter of George & Anna Marie (DeStefano) LaFaro.

Anna was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1946).  She was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church.  She was a Life Member of the VFW Auxiliary where she served as chaplain for 10 years.  Anna had also been a member of the Maple Leaf Cootiettes, the Hornell Rebecca Lodge and the Hornell Association.  She was an avid bingo player and enjoyed playing cards.

She was married on December 27, 1947, to Joseph LoCoco who died in 1992.  In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Joseph LoCoco; brothers, Joseph (died 1909), Joseph (died 1918), Hugh LaFaro, George LaFaro, Dominic LaFaro, Angelo LaFaro and Joseph “Sonny” LaFaro; her sisters, Congetta France, Josephine LoCoco, Vincena Trowbridge, Teresa Nasca, Mary “Mamie” Mastriani, Catherine Wilson, Lucille Fawcett & Rose LaFaro; her son-in-law, Mickey Donahue.

Surviving are 2 daughters, Patricia LoCoco of Hornell and Belinda (John) Coleman of Hornell; her daughter-in-law, Beverly Pierce of Canisteo; 7 grandchildren, Kevin (Melissa) Hughes, Joseph Hughes, Michael Hughes, Sean Hughes, John (Elizabeth Vanhouten) Coleman II, Rachelle Carnes and Michael Hardy; 5 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; several nieces & nephews.

The family of Anna M. Randy J. Harkenrider – 44 – of 427 Cleveland Ave., North Hornell, died following a brave and heroic battle with cancer.

Born in Bellevue, NE on August 30, 1970, he lived most of his life in the Hornell area.  He was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1989) and later attended Finger Lakes Community College in Canandaigua and also SUNY Alfred.  He also served in the US National Guard.

Randy had been employed as a Corrections Officer prior to moving to Colorado where he worked as an Electrical Foreman and Project Manager for 10 years.   He returned to Hornell in 2006 and was employed at Advanced Transit Manufacturing (ATM), as Vice President of Sales & Marketing.

Randy was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church.  He had a genuine interest in local government and served as 3rd Ward City Alderman for several years.   He had a love of sports and was an avid Oakland Raider Football and Nebraska Football fan.   He lent his love of sports to coaching youth football in both Hornell and Colorado.  An avid outdoorsman, Randy enjoyed hunting and fishing.  Throughout the years he went on several hunting trips to places including Colorado, Canada, California and New Mexico.  He recently went on a fishing trip to Alaska.

Above all Randy enjoyed spending time with his family.  He was a very devoted husband and father. He would not miss any of Leah, Sam and Ryan’s sporting or school functions. Whenever you would see Randy you would see this fun loving, full of life guy that would do anything for anyone at any time.   His smile was contagious and brought much joy to everyone with whom he had contact.  Randy has many, many friends that will cherish the memories that were made throughout his life time.

Randy enjoyed pushing himself at various competitions.  He was a 3-time finisher of the Tough Mudder, participating in the last one while undergoing cancer treatment.  In addition to running several 5K races, Randy was proud to have taken part in the “Tillman Run” which is named after former football great, Pat Tillman, who was killed in action in Afghanistan.  He also ran this race while undergoing cancer treatment.

He was preceded in death by his Father, Samuel “Jim” Dineen along with several members of the Dineen, Harkenrider, Flint & Kull Families.

He was married on November 24, 2001 to the former Susan “Crete” Crowley who survives.  Also surviving are 2 daughters, Leah & Samantha Harkenrider; 1 son, Ryan Harkenrider; his mother, Mary Dineen; his sister, Christine (Earl) Rawleigh, niece Nikki Rawleigh, nephews Jordan and Toby Rawleigh, Joseph (Kathy) Flint, Alex, Spencer and Elliot Flint.  Also Robert (Debbie) Dineen, Katie, Megan and Linzy Dineen; his In-laws; Joseph and Janet Crowley, Robert (Tracy) Crowley, Stephen (Yvonne) Crowley, Katheen Crowley (Christopher Murtha) and nieces Mia and Kirra Crowley;  as well as many members of the Flint, Harkenrider, Dineen, Kull & Crowley families.

The family of Randy J. Harkenrider will receive friends on Thursday, February 12 from 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday (February 13, 2015) at 10:00 AM at St. Ann’s Church.  Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
