Lane H. Baggett – 73 – a resident at Elderwood at Hornell Nursing Facility, formerly of Belmont, NY, died Sunday afternoon (March 17, 2024) at
St. James Hospital following a brief illness.

A native of Tennessee, he was the son of Enloe & Tallulah (Lane) Baggett. Lane was a high school graduate and was a Veteran of the US Army. While living in Tennessee, he was employed as a laborer at a local chicken farm. More recently, he was a member of the Belmont Fire Company.

Lane enjoyed watching football on TV and also enjoyed buying & selling antiques. He also had a deep affection for his “Feline Companions” (his pet cats).

He was married to the former Karen Peasley Robins who preceded him in death.

Surviving are several nieces, nephews & cousins.

At Lane’s request there will be no calling hours. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family with final interment at the Bath National Cemetery, Bath, NY.

James A. “Jim” Payne – 62 – of County Route #1, Campbell, NY, died Tuesday morning (March 19, 2024) following a long illness.

Born in Corning, NY on August 16, 1961, he was the son of Joseph & Waneta (Grist) Payne.

Jim grew up in Campbell and attended school in the Addison School District.  Throughout the years he was employed as a general farm hand, working on several area farms.  Jim had a deep love of the outdoors and nature and enjoyed hunting and fishing.  He truly loved his family and enjoyed spending as much time as possible with them.

Surviving are his daughter, Tristica (Aaron) Davis of Savona; his son, Jeremy (Michayla Orlando) Payne of Lowville, NY; 3 brothers, Danny (Donna) Payne of Campbell, Rickey Payne of Campbell and Paul (Tracy) Payne of Savona; his sister, Barb Payne of Campbell; 4 grandchildren, Wyatt Smith, Ryleigh Smith, Karsin Davis and Ledger Payne; several nieces & nephews.  Also surviving are the mother of his children with whom he remained friends, Amy (Martin) Pond of Savona.

Hammondsport, NY

Donna J. Williams – 86 – of Shorewood Drive, Hammondsport died Monday afternoon, March 18, 2024 following a long illness.

Born in Warsaw, NY on October 21, 1937, she was the daughter of Donald and Gladys (Preston) Farley.

Donna grew up in Almond and attended Alfred-Almond Central School (class of 1955).  After graduating from high school, she studied banking and was employed for a number of years at Steuben Trust Company.  In the 1960s, Donna was hired as an office assistant at Xerox Corporation in Rochester, a position she held until 1969.  Her most important and rewarding job, however, was taking care of her family as a homemaker and mother.

In her younger years, Donna was an avid bowler and was the secretary of both the Junior Major League and the Hornell Women’s Bowling Association.  She was a member of the Hornell Moose Lodge and the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.  Donna loved the outdoors and enjoyed many hunting and fishing trips with her husband, Bob.  She would accompany Bob on hunting and fishing trips around the United States and Canada.

Donna was a former member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church.  More recently, she was a parishioner at St. Stanislaus Church in Bradford, NY.

On September 20, 1969, Donna married Robert “Bob” Williams who survives.  Also surviving are her son, Darryl (Jamie) Williams of Hornell; 3 grandchildren, Krystle (Mike) Malm of Wayland, NY, Ronan Williams and Kara Williams both of Hornell; great-grandchildren, Lincoln & Payton; sister-in-law, Betsey Farley of Arkport, NY; sister- and brother-in-law, Sharon (Jim) Northup of Hammondsport, NY and sister-in-law, Linda Williams of Wayland, NY; several nieces, nephews, & cousins.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Floyd Farley; sister- and brother-in-law, Dolores (Joseph) HerrNeckar and brother-in-law, Chuck Williams.

James R. “Jim” Hillman – 56 – of 18 Pardee St., Hornell, died Thursday afternoon (March 14, 2024) at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.

Born in Hornell on January 22, 1968, he was the son of Robert & Eleanor (Trowbridge) Hillman.

Jim grew up in Hornell and was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1987). He resided Rochester for a time and for several years lived in Florida. While in Rochester & Florida, he was employed as a surveyor. He returned to Hornell about four years ago.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert “Bob” Hillman who died September 19, 2018.

Surviving are his mother, Eleanor Hillman of Hornell; his brother, David (Kathleen) Hillman of Hornell; his sister, Kim (John) Weyand of Hornell; 1 aunt; along with several nieces, nephews & cousins.

Warren R. “Wally” Amphlett – 79 – of West Van Scoter St., Hornell, passed away at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY on Tuesday March 12, 2024 following a brief battle with esophageal cancer.

Wally was born October 21, 1944 in Hornell, NY to Warren Edward and Margaret “Mitzi” Gemmell Amphlett. He grew up in Hornell and was a graduate of Hornell High School (Class of 1962).

After high school, Wally earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education from Cortland State College (SUNY Cortland) and his dual Master’s Degree in Education and Coaching from Alfred University. He began his career in 1969 at Whitesville Central School, where he taught physical education and coached for three decades, eventually retiring in 1999.

In high school, Wally met the love of his life, Mary Sherman, who survives. They were married on September 3, 1966- the same day Wally’s draft notice arrived in the mail. Following their honeymoon, Wally attended basic training in Fort Dix, GA, and then served four years in Schweinfurt, Germany, as the head of a mechanized motor pool. While serving, Wally was recognized as an Expert Marksman, honored with an Army Commendation Medal, and graduated Officer Candidate School as a 1st Lieutenant.

Wally loved sports from an early age. In his youth, he played Hornell Little League Baseball and in the Sunday School Basketball League. In high school, Wally excelled on the Hornell High School Varsity Baseball, Basketball and Football teams, as well as in the Babe Ruth Baseball League. He went on to play baseball at SUNY Cortland, a perennially stellar collegiate baseball program. Wally continued his love of baseball later in life as an umpire and Rules Interpreter with the Steuben-Allegany County Umpires Association.

As an adult, Wally’s passion for athletics never waned. He provided countless young adults with his guidance and wisdom as Head Coach of the Boys Varsity Basketball teams at Whitesville Central School and Wellsville High School, retiring with a lifetime record of 324-219. Wally was voted the Section V Class D Coach of the Year for the 1973-1974 and 1985-1986 basketball seasons, and led his team to a sectional championship in 1990. Throughout his career, Wally was sought out by various basketball camps and clinics around the country to provide instruction, a testament to the great respect he earned in the basketball community. He served as the Allegany County Athletic Director and the Section V Basketball Seating coordinator until his retirement. Wally was inducted into the Hornell High School Hall of Fame Class of 1999 and the Allegany County Athletic Association Hall of Fame Class of 2005.

Wally was a lifelong fan of the New York Yankees, Buffalo Bills, Syracuse Orangemen, and all things college basketball. In the Amphlett house, the NCAA College Basketball Tournament (March Madness) was always regarded as “the most wonderful time of the year”. In more recent years, he became a fan of THE Ohio State University athletic programs when two of his grandchildren attended college there. Wally loved to work on his yard – his lawn and flowers always looked like a picture out of a magazine. He also enjoyed golfing and Wednesday Golf League with his friends was always a highlight of his week.

While Wally’s love for athletics was never in question, his greatest enjoyment was his family. He particularly enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s activities and sporting events.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wally & Mitzi Amphlett, along with several in-laws and other family members.

In addition to his wife, Mary, Wally is survived by two children, Amy (Andrew) Wulforst of Rochester and Matthew “Matt” Amphlett of Hornell; his grandchildren Noah, Ella, Jadon, Cameran, Tristan; his brother Jack (Maureen) Amphlett of Ontario, NY, and his sister Maureen Yurkewecz of Spencerport, NY, and numerous in-laws and cousins.

William C. “Bill” Raub – 81 – of 5173 Whitcomb Road, Friendship, NY died Monday evening (March 11, 2024) at Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville where he was taken after being stricken at home.

Born in Hornell on March 16, 1942, he was the son of Earl Raub & Mary (Martin) Raub.

Bill grew up in Hornell and attended Hornell High School. He was a veteran of the US Navy and traveled extensively throughout the world, serving aboard on a US Navy Aircraft Carrier along with time at Patuxent River Maryland while doing aircraft maintenance.

Following his honorable discharge from the Navy, Bill resided in Jacksonville, FL before returning to Hornell where he was employed in the trades, and at Crowley’s Dairy in Arkport. Following a move to South Dayton, NY, Bill was employed as maintenance superintendant for Carnation Dairy Facility.

Years later, Bill lived in South Carolina where he was employed as an engineer at PET Dairies. He later resided in Virginia where he served as Chief Engineer in the construction of Shenandoah’s Pride Dairy Processing Facility in Mount Crawford, VA. He later returned to Florida and subsequently South Dayton, then resided in Friendship for the past 12 years.

Bill became a member of the Genesis Bible Church of Scio, NY when he was baptized by Pastor Marc Chamberlain. In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting & fishing and was a former member of the Hornell Moose Lodge. His greatest joy, however, was simply spending time with his family.

He was preceded in death by other close family members.

Bill was married for 61 years to the former Beverly Preston who survives. Also surviving are 2 sons, William “Bill” (Cindy) Raub, Jr. of Friendship and Wayne (Everlyn) Raub of Friendship; his daughter, Silka Raub of Kane, PA; several siblings, including his sister, Lorna Palmiter-Dansby; 9 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; several nieces & nephews.

Barbara L Monaghan – 69 – of 8 Meadowbrook Rd, Arkport sadly left us suddenly Friday, March 8th, 2024 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, following a brief illness.

Born in North Hornell on August 10, 1954, she was the daughter of Marian (Sutfin) Monaghan and Elbert Monaghan of Arkport.

Barb grew up in the Village of Arkport and was a graduate of Arkport Central School (class of 1972). She graduated from Alfred University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and devoted her working life to helping those suffering from alcoholism & addiction by working as a drug & alcohol councilor.

She was raised and later raised her three children in the same home that her father built. Barb enjoyed quilting, sewing, reading, bird watching, working in her flower garden and working on Jig-Saw Puzzles. She also had a deep affection for animals and will be sadly missed by her three “feline companions” (AKA cats), Lucy, Jackson and Molly.

She was selfless and kind to everyone she met and loved her family dearly. Barb will be greatly missed by all those who were touched by her genuine smile and contagious laughter. May she rest in peace as she joins her dear mom and dad and those who have gone before her.

She is survived by her three children William “Henry” Jamison of Arkport, Lynn (James) Sinsebox of Arkport, and Lauren (Brandon Brewster) Monaghan of Dansville; two granddaughters Harley Jamison Monaghan of Wellsville, and Brooke Brewster of Dansville; her sister, Patricia (Robert) Codispoti of Almond, her niece Jennifer Codispoti of Rochester, and nephew Aaron (Mari) Codispoti of Marble Falls, TX along with many aunts, cousins and step grandchildren.

Linda L. (Smith) Gleason – 75 – of 6 Sheldon Court, Hornell, died Wednesday morning, March 6, 2024 at her home, following a long illness.

Born in Hornell on June 27, 1948, she was the daughter of Raymond & Luella (Hoyt) Smith.

A lifelong resident of Hornell, Linda attended St. Ann School before graduating from Hornell High School (class of 1966).
Upon graduation, she enrolled in St. James School of X-Ray and pursued a career as an X-Ray Technician. Linda trained at Ithaca Hospital for one year before being hired in the X-Ray Department at Bethesda Community Hospital, a position she held until its closing in 1985.

Following the closing of Bethesda Community, Linda was hired by Dr. Auringer and worked in his office until his retirement.

She spent the latter part of her career in the education field, initially taking a position with Steuben-Allegany BOCES in Bath and then the Hornell City School District. Linda was a beloved and dedicated teacher’s aide for 12 years. She retired in 2010.

Spending time with family was Linda’s greatest joy in life. She enjoyed reading, knitting, and crossword puzzles. A sports enthusiast, Linda could often be found cheering on her children and grandchildren at sporting events, and she loved rooting for the Buffalo Bills and the New York Yankees. She was a self-proclaimed BINGO fanatic!

Linda was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ignatius Loyola Church and, most recently,
St. Ann’s Church in Hornell. She was a member of the G. Carducci Lodge (Sons of Italy) and the Hornell Elks Lodge.

On July 19, 1969, Linda was married to James L. Gleason who died May 22, 2020 after 50 years of marriage. She was also
predeceased by her infant daughter, Meghan Elizabeth Gleason; her parents, Luella & Raymond Smith; one brother,
Raymond Smith; nephew, Trooper Larry Gleason; brother-in-law, Marv Konz; 2 sisters-in-law, Ann Smith & Eileen Connors.

Surviving are 2 daughters, Bridget (Steve) Minisce of Raleigh, NC and Kate (Chris) Secondo of Hornell; her son, Tim
Gleason of Gaithersburg, MD; grandchildren, Anna Updyke & Scotty Minisce; 2 sisters, Ann Konz & Marilyn Batra; sister-in-law, Judy Smith; brother- and sister-in-law, Larry & Rosemary Gleason; many nieces, nephews, & cousins.

Bonnie Lee Blackman – 80 – formerly of Hornell and Rexville, died Tuesday evening (March 5, 2024) at Taylor Health Care Facility in Bath where she had resided for the past 3 years.

Born in New Hampshire on May 28, 1943, she was the daughter of Bud Blackman and Shirlie (Geddas) Blackman Ballam and the stepdaughter of Donald Ballam.

Bonnie grew up in Manchester, NH where she lived & worked for most of her life. Following her retirement she resided in Hornell for several years and Coudersport, PA before moving to Rexville, NY about 8 years ago.

An avid reader, Bonnie loved to read just about anything, including novels, magazines and newspapers. She also enjoyed working on crossword puzzles and watching game shows and home remodeling shows on TV.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Nancy Houle; 3 brothers, James Ballam, Jacky Ballam and Freddie Blackman.

Surviving are he daughter, Linda (Chad) Potter of Hornell; 5 brothers, Henry Blackman, Thomas Blackman, Stanley Blackman, Bruce Blackman and James Blackman; her grandchildren, Monica (Everett) Reffitt of Hornell and Brandy Houle of Manchester, NH; 3 great-grandchildren, Natalee Glick, MaryJayne Reffitt and Brentlee Fremeau; several nieces & nephews.

David T. “Dave” Andrezzi – 95 – of 77 Elizabeth St., Hornell, died Monday evening (March 4, 2024) at his home, following a long illness.

Born in Brooklyn, NY on September 11, 1928, he was the son of Thomas & Rosalia (Puccio) Andreozzi.

Dave grew up in Brooklyn and at the age of 16 enlisted in the US Army Air Force after forging his parents’ signature on the US Enlistment Consent form. He was a Veteran of WWII serving primarily as a member of the Military Police. Dave was stationed at many places throughout the world including the United States and Japan. He was honorably discharged after serving 2 years with the US Air Force/Army and 3 years as a member of the US Air Force Reserves.

After being honorably discharged from the military, Dave returned to Brooklyn and eventually moved to Hornell. He worked for a time at Stern & Stern Industries and later was employed for about 30 years at the former Erie Railroad, Erie-Lackawanna Railroad and Conrail in many capacities, primarily as a Lineman.

Following his “retirement” from the railroad, Dave began working for Maple City Dodge in Hornell as a driver and parts deliveryman, retiring with over 25 years of service.

Dave was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church. He was an avid fisherman who enjoyed fishing in lakes, streams, ponds & rivers. In his youth while living in Brooklyn, Dave was a talented boxer and remained a boxing fan for the rest of his life. He was also a lifelong Yankees fan and never missed watching a game. He even attended some games at the old stadium with some of his grandchildren.

Dave was known as “Poppy” to his grandchildren and great grandchildren, who he always enjoyed spending time with, and to many around town, he was known as “Grandpa Dave.”

He was married to the former Mary Cartella who died July 8, 1996. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Anthony Andreozzi and Lawrence Andreozzi.

Surviving are his children, Rosalie (Steve) Muhlollen of Hartsville, Joann Kuhn of Hornell, Mary Angela Andrezzi of Hornell, David Andrezzi of Hornell, Valerie Burch of Arkport, Thomas (Heather) Andrezzi of Casselberry, FL and Ann Marie Dailey of Hamlin, NY; his sister, Nancy Cartella of Hornell; his brother, Francis Andreozzi of Lake Havasu, AZ; his in-laws, Carl (Mary) Cartella, Lou (Beth) Cartella; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; several nieces & nephews.
