Joan M. Cady – 84 – of 6835 Upper Glen Ave., Hornell, NY, died unexpectedly Saturday morning (January 2, 2021) at St. James Hospital, shortly after being admitted after being taken by Hornell City Ambulance from Hornell Gardens, where she had been a resident since March.
Born in Hornell on June 30, 1936, she was the daughter of Warren & Gladys (Bacon) Sackett.
Joan grew up in Hornell and was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1954). Following high school graduation, she enlisted in the US Air Force, serving her country from 1955 until her honorable discharge in 1957. While in the Air Force, Joan was given the opportunity to travel throughout the world, visiting places such as France, Spain & Europe, visiting 14 countries in total while enlisted.
She was married on May 24th, 1958 to Clarence E. Cady who preceded her on August 22, 2020. Along with her husband, she operated their 116-acre farm, raising corn, oats and wheat while also raising beef cows. They lived and raised their family in the home that they built.
Joan had been a member of The Hornell Moose Lodge and The Arkport American Legion. She was an amazing cook and enjoyed spending time in her kitchen, cooking & baking for her family. She enjoyed watching all the animals in the field behind the house, especially the deer & turkeys. Joan had a soft spot for cats and took care of the local strays. Now she can be with her loving cat, “Lovebug”. She enjoyed spending time with her three grandsons. She was also an avid Buffalo Bills fan and especially loved rooting for her team during the Super Bowl years.
She was a tough, loving mother who loved life and the fact that she was married to Clarence for over 60 years is simply amazing.
In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by 2 brothers, Ozzie Woodworth and Jack Sackett; her sister, Dorothy Rectenwald.
Surviving are 2 sons, Roger Cady of Hornell and Greg (Tammy Mead) Cady of Hornell; 1 daughter, Susan Cady of Hornell; 1 sister, Marilyn (Richard) Muhollen of Hornell; 1 brother, Fred Flurschutz of South Dansville; 3 grandsons, Jesse Mead, Billy Cady & Owen Cady; several nieces & nephews.
The family of Joan M. Cady will receive friends on Tuesday from 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY. United States Air Force Military Honors will be held at the conclusion of calling hours at 6:00 PM. Final interment will be at the Bath National Cemetery, Bath, NY.
In recognition of Joan’s service to her country as a member of the US Air Force, the American Flag at the Dagon Funeral Home will be flown at half-staff.
