Helen L. Winzer – (92) – lifelong Hornell resident, died Sunday morning (April 22, 2018) at Elderwood of Hornell where she had resided for the past six months.
Born in Hornell on November 3, 1925 she was the daughter of Kenneth & Gertrude (Cozy) Winzer and the step-daughter of William Eller.
Helen was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1944). She was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church.
She had been employed for a time at the former McBride’s Women & Children’s Shop in Hornell. For 26 years she served as the “lifestyles editor” at the Hornell Evening Tribune. She was responsible for the writing of engagement & wedding announcements, as well as obituary notices. Other duties had included editing responsibilities for the social pages of The Hornell Spectator and the compilation of the local columns such as Friends & Neighbors, which spotlighted area residents in the news.
She was preceded in death by her lifelong companion, Sylvester “Babe” Daniels who died in 2000.
Surviving are several cousins, including Lois Bardeen Miller of Rochester, Betty Slingluff of Meadville, PA, Kay Roberts of Meadville, PA, and Nancy Premo of Rochester. Also surviving are her “Hornell Family,” Lenny & Kathy Caruso and Joann LaVerde.
At Helen’s request there will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 10:00 AM at St. Ann’s Church with burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Helen’s family request that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in her name be made to St. Ann’s Church, 27 Erie Ave., Hornell, NY 14843.
