Seraphina A. “Sarah” Fortuna – (94) – a resident of Hornell Gardens, formerly of 36 Sawyer St. Site, Hornell, died Tuesday evening (November 2, 2010) at St. James Mercy Hospital, surrounded by her loving family. She had resided at Hornell Gardens since 1998.
A native & live resident of Hornell, she was born June 29, 1916, and was the daughter of Dominic & Rose (Girondo) Carretto.
Sarah attended Bryant School in Hornell and was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a lifelong communicant of St. Ann’s Church. She was a former member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Sons of Italy.
She was employed for several years as a waitress at the lunch counter of the former Dunn’s Drug Store. She worked many years at Loohns Dry Cleaners and volunteered her time as a “Foster Grandmother” at St. James Mercy Hospital for several years.
Sarah was married on June 11, 1938 to John J. Fortuna who died June 2, 1991. She was also preceded in death by her son, Gaeton Fortuna; 2 sisters, Ann Constantino and Grace Carretto; 4 brothers, Louis Carretto, James Carretto, Dominic Carretto and Frank Carretto.
Surviving are 1 son, John (Mary) Fortuna of Canisteo; 1 daughter, Lucy Booth of Eden Prairie, MN; 1 sister, Josephine Carretto of Hornell; 5 grandchildren, Patti (Rich) Clancy of Hornell, Mike Fortuna of Hornell, Don (Renae) Fortuna of Hornell Thomas Booth of Minnesota and Angela Funderburg of Minnesota; 4 great-grandchildren, Patrick Clancy, Natalie Fortuna, Adrianna Fortuna and Kayla Booth; several nieces & nephews.
At Sarah’s request there will be no calling hours. Family & friends are invited to attend a brief prayer service Wednesday morning at 10:00 AM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 AM at St. Ann’s Church with burial in St. Ann’s Cemetery.
