Hugh C. Mortimer

Hugh C. Mortimer – 91- formerly of 7 Wightman Ave., North Hornell, died Wednesday evening (October 20, 2010) at McAuley Manor where he has resided for the past 2 years.

Born in Sparrow Bush, NY on August 19, 1919, he was the son of Charles & Catherine Mortimer.

Hugh grew up in the Sparrow Bush – Port Jervis area and was a graduate of Port Jervis High School.  He was a Veteran of WWII, serving in the US Navy.

He was employed in several capacities, including master mechanic for 44 years at the former Erie Railroad, Erie Lackawanna Railroad and Conrail.  He was stationed in several locations, including Port Jervis, Hornell, Scranton, PA, Gerard Oh and Marion, OH.  He returned to Hornell in 1982 following his retirement.  While living in Port Jervis, he was a life member of the Masons Lodge #328.

Hugh was married on April 7, 1951 to the former Mary C. White who died in 1994.  He was also preceded in death by his son, William Mortimer who died in 1978; 2 sisters, Jessie McKeeby and Anna Felter.

Surviving are several nieces & nephews including William (Joanne) Hogan of Hornell, Catherine Hogan, Mary (Richard) Bovewzi, Patricia Crawford, Robert Felter, James Felter, Thom Mokeeby, Glenda Bohan, and Mary Jane Gardner.

At Hugh’s request there will be no calling hours.  Private services will be held at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY at the convenience of the family with Deacon Robert McCormick officiating.  Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
