Mary Elizabeth Hollenbeck – 94 – of Andover, formerly of Greenwood, died early Saturday morning (October 9, 2010) at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, following a brief illness.
Born in the Town of Ward on June 20, 1916, she was the daughter of George & Carrollotta (Corwin) McAndrews.
Mary was a graduate of the former Alfred High School (Class of 1936) and later attended Geneseo Normal School.
She lived in Buffalo for several years where she was employed in the shipping departments at the Dunlop Tire Corporation. She later resided in Lockport for several years. While in Buffalo, she met Lloyd S. Hollenbeck. They were married in 1939. She has resided in the Alfred, Greenwood & Andover areas since 1948.
Mary was a passionate reader and thoroughly enjoyed the countless hours working in her flower garden. She collected & re-finished antiques and was noted for baking — especially her delicious pies, cakes and over-sized cookies. She enjoyed history and politics and had a true love and appreciation of nature.
A loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Mary loved to pass down her wisdom to her family & friends. She enjoyed reading to her grandkids and taking long walks with them. Time spent with her grandchildren always brought a smile to her face.
She was always devoted to her family and felt privileged to have taken care of her mother and mother-in-law at the later stages of their lives. She will be sadly missed by everyone who knew her.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd Hollenbeck; her brothers, Edward Dougherty, Francis McAndrews, Louis McAndrews, George McAndrews and Howard McAndrews.
Surviving are 1 daughter, Bernadine (Gerald) Green of Andover; 1 son, Lloyd (Carol) Hollenbeck of Andover; 2 brothers, Vincent (Elsie) McAndrews of Wellsville and James (Carolyn) McAndrews of Wellsville; 6 grandchildren, Michael Douglas Hollenbeck, Lori Ann Hollenbeck, Bradley James Hollenbeck, Eric Jacob Hollenbeck, Christopher Vincent Green and Stacy Ann Teichelman; 5 great-grandchildren, Jachob, Dylan, Stephanie, Abigail & Heidi; several nieces & nephews.
The family of Mary Elizabeth Hollenbeck will receive friends on Monday from 2:00 – 4:00 PM & 7:00 – 9:00 PM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY where funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday with Rev. Paula Roulette officiating. Burial will be in Cold Springs Cemetery, Lockport, NY.
Mary’s family request that memorial contributions in her name be made to the Andover Rescue Squad, Andover, NY 14806. Forms will be available at the Dagon Funeral Home.
