Georgia S. Psyhos, 91, formerly of 83 East Washington St., Hornell, peacefully entered into eternal rest on Friday, August 13, 2010.
Georgia was born on November 28, 1918 in Newark, NY to Nicholas and Katina Scarmoutsos of Koupia, Greece.
When Georgia was 3 or 4 years old the family moved back to Koupia Greece where she spent most of her childhood. Upon returning to America after the war in 1948, she spent her first days back in America living with an uncle in Corning, NY and worked in her uncle’s candy store, located in Watkins Glen, NY.
Shortly after meeting George Psyhos of Hornell at a Greek Picnic they married on September 12, 1949, in Corning, NY. George and Georgia moved to Hornell, where George was owner of the Texas Café. Georgia set up housekeeping and spent her time keeping her home and raising her 4 children.
In 2009 Georgia moved to Absolut Care of Houghton, where she spent her remaining time happily participating in the activities offered especially Bingo and Yahtzee
Georgia was preceded by her husband of 52 years George; her eldest son James; 3 sisters, Pota Scarmoutsos, Evangeline Mariades, Joanna Martys.
Surviving are 1 daughter Elaine (Lincoln) Barnes, of Hornell; 2 sons, Manuel Psyhos, of Rochester, and Peter Psyhos (Kathy) Burns of Lexington, Mass; her eldest sister Matina Lafkas of Ann Arbor MI; 8 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
The family of Georgia Psyhos will receive friends on Tuesday from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM and again from
7:00 PM – 9:00 PM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY where funeral & committal services will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday with Father George Zervos officiating. Burial will be in Rural Cemetery.
Georgia’s family request that memorial contributions in her name be made the Hornell Ambulance Fund, 108 Broadway, Hornell, NY 14843. Memorial forms will be available at the Dagon Funeral Home.
